East + West Glamour

Fashion and decor. Two of my absolute favorite things. And I have to admit to having a fascination with the relationship between the two. The causal influences of one upon the other. Do runways trends influence our homes or is it often the other way around? The answer to both is a resounding yes. On the whole, the two are so intertwined that it is almost a waste of time to try to sort of which led the other on trends and styles.

I like to think of personal style as all encompassing. Dressing your home is not so terribly different from adorning your body. If you favor chic mod or tried-and-true traditional in one area you are quite likely to love it in the other. Similarly: you should surround yourself in colors that flatter you - whether it be a gorgeous gown or the color of your walls. Are you a sucker for texture? You will likely find your closet and your home filled with touchable fabrics. Is gold your weakness? I suspect we'll find your bedside tables and your jewelry drawer adorned with gilded accents. The two areas are fascinatingly intermingled and - I suspect - always will be.

Personally, I always lean towards classic lines, elegant accents and timeless styles. I do love my gold, and I want touchably soft textiles around me at all times. Rest assured: you can favor classics and still keep things incredibly fresh. It's all in how you style it.

Just take a look at Aerin Lauder's dressing room. I have always loved this image. What's not to love? Floor to ceiling silk puddling on the ground. The handpainted chinoiserie wallpaper in a flowery, flowing design on the softest aqua ground. A glistening chandelier which is somehow upstaged by this insanely gorgeous brass desk. This room has such an abundance of femininity that it is almost literally dripping from the wall. This is somehow incredibly powerful yet quietly reserved at the same time. It's an interesting mix of bold and delicate, organic and modern. I love it.

To me, if this space were an outfit it would be worn by a woman with absolute confidence. She loves her life, she takes care of herself and she enjoys the very act of dressing herself. I see a flowing gown with Grecian influences and a curve-hugging silhouette. I see opulent gold everywhere: the shoes, the jewels... everywhere. These golden accents are present, but somehow not overdone. I see her wearing a chic chignon and a classic manicure. The updo serves to highlight the handcrafted earrings (that mirror the artisan quality of the wallpaper). The perfect manicure would be showcased so perfectly against the glimmering clutch in her beautiful hands.

But don't be fooled for her overwhelming femininity. It is her strength and not her weakness. This is a woman who accomplishes everything she has ever set out to accomplish. And she isn't finished checking off her life's to-do list. Not even close.

Her posture reflects that lifelong confidence and her skin glows like a woman lit from within. She is luminous, driven and poised. Like this magical room, she has wisdom and inner strength beyond her years and will blaze a gilded trail on her way to her version of "the top."

She, like this room, leads others to wonder how she does it. She is equal parts open book and intriguing mystery. She epitomizes style and grace yet possesses a dynamic energy that won't be contained or easily defined. One thing is certain: she knows what she loves and carefully edits her personal space and her closet to contain only those things that completely delight her. And isn't that what personal style is all about? I think so.

Be Still, My Italian Heart

My husband will be the first to tell you I have an Italian soul. That means a lot coming from a Sicilian. And while I can't find any ancestral proof that we originated from L'Italia, I assure you that there's no place on this planet that resonates with me more than Italy.

The people, the energy, the architecture, the art... everything. And I haven't even tapped the topic of natural beauty. When I have made my millions stateside I assure you' I'll be packing it up and moving to the Amalfi to spend my days in a dream-worthy villa overlooking the sea.

Until that day manifests, I'll torture you and I both with photos and posts of this nature. Why? because it hurts so good!

Today's incredible photos come to us courtesy of Architectural Digest. They taunt and tempt us with the announcement of eight recently opened hotels that are "perfect spots for a couple's getaway." That may be so, but I'm tempted to go all Brangelina and bring my brood to each of these incredible spots.

If pressed to answer which ones I love best I'll declare my love for the 20-room Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa on the Amalfi Coast (good LORD is it magical!) and the apricot-hued Relais Villa Vittoria overlooking Lake Como. (I think it's safe to assume that all of us, married or not, are always up for good Clooney sighting.)

Of course you can never ever go wrong with a St. Regis... especially one in Florence overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. I also feel as though I have unfinished business in Florence because of all the cities we've visited in Italy, this one was one where I felt the most rushed.

Why do I do this to you on a Monday morning? Because it is your responsibility to pursue your passions and your dreams. And mine are of speaking fluent Italian, having a villa or two abroad (you read that right) and traveling the world with my fun little family.

So... I'm off to do what it takes to get us there. How about you? Where do you need to be?

Passionate Pursuit of Excellence

If you listen closely to leaders, entrepreneurs, moguls and admirable people a common theme will ultimately emerge. Excellence. They demand it from themselves, they expect it from their team and they strive to create it with whatever grand idea, innovation or product they are developing. A simple word but a lifelong challenge: the pursuit of excellence.

Immediately names like Steve Jobs (known for his relentless pursuit of perfection) and Richard Branson (who refuses to take no for an answer) come to mind. People for whom "it's not possible" or "it's good enough" readies them for the challenge.

Also look at Alli Webb the founder of DryBar. Do one thing and do it exceptionally well. That's her (and therefore her brand's) goal. Be the best. Accept nothing less. Offer exceptional quality and service. Raise your standards and be far better than anyone else would ever dream should be expected of you.

These thoughts all came to mind as I attended a Nespresso event at one of Dallas's hottest eateries, PrivateSocial. Once in, I had the opportunity to sit with Padma Lakshmi of Top Chef fame. She shared with me why she partnered with the brand and what makes a famous model/author/host/mother/businesswoman choose to add coffee spokesperson to her long list of titles. Her answer was fairly straightforward: excellence.

Listening to her speak about coffee was eye opening. The vocabulary she used and the passion she had for the topic was something I'd only seen among oenophiles. She spoke of varietals and picking the berries (yes, berries... for in face what we call a coffee bean is actually one half of the seed within the delicate berry) at the precise right moment from the right location and roasting them to the unique roasting level that is best for them. Using terms like "science" and "respect" she shared stories on how far and wide Nespresso (a European phenomenon) goes to source the ultimate product. Perfection is the goal.

You'd think it would end there... but as the event went on we had the opportunity to talk to many people from the product team. It was pretty clear that although ceramic glasses and shiny proprietary equipment surrounded us, we we were hardly talking about coffee any longer. They were preaching a different gospel. How to conceive the best idea, execute it flawlessly and deliver it to the right people at the right time. Do one thing and do it exceptionally well. Better than your fans, your competitors, your supporters or anyone else expects from you.

Isn't this the formula for success for every business and - frankly - every life? Be the very best at what you do. Pursue excellence with every fiber of your being. The result in this case was incredible coffee in a very unique delivery system with some of the prettiest packaging and equipment I've seen. But how does this apply to your life? Are you striving to be the very best at what you do in life? In excellence your goal?

If not, take this moment to shift your focus. Decide to be unreasonably great at your craft, your business, your job, your life.

How did I get this from fabulous food and incredible coffee? Because it was clear that excellence was the goal of the PR team, the brand leaders, Padma, Master Chef Tiffany Derry and all of those involved. Passion for excellence is impossible to hide and always shines through.

Pursue excellence and don't settle for anything less in your life. Ever.

I'd like to graciously thank the Nespresso team for the invitation and the incredible products they shared with us. Thank you for a reminder to be truly great at even the finer details of my craft. True greatness is all in the details after all.

Outdoor Luxe: Southampton Style

I was admiring the Tory Burch estate photos the way one admires overly fussy cuisine. I liked it. I appreciated it for all its complexity... but it just wasn't to my taste. Patterns... lots of them. Prints. Chintz. And more pedigreed pieces than most people will encounter in their time here on earth.

And then... I happened upon these photos of her pool house and the grandeur that is her outdoor living space. Consider me sold. I decided right then and there that if I had to take this property as-is I would do it just for the phenomenal poolside lifestyle.

Might I add... the property is stunning. Absolutely stunning... I would just need to start anew with the interior design to live there myself. But Tory... what a lovely retreat you've created for yourself. I applaud your incredible success and the incredible life you have created for yourself. And as for that pool house? I do hope you entertain their frequently... it's a magical addition to your home.

The Big Two-Oh

Hard to comprehend that Christian Louboutin has been crafting his masterful creations for two decades. I say this largely because his brand has only been a household name for the better part of this decade. And yet, his creative genius has been focused on fine tuning the craftsmanship of shoes for twenty years. What an anniversary!

If the thought of $1000+ footwear makes you and your financial planner woozy, might I suggest the book that celebrates their design? It's the savvy girl's ticket to fabulously hot footwear while still keeping her Benjamins cool.

If, on the other hand, money is no object... I adore these croc-sequined peep-toe pumps that beguile me with their shmmery luster. By the way, I wear a size 6. ;)

Louboutin Looms Large over LA

You lucky Angelenos have all the fun. An 80 degree New Year's Day. Balmy, breezy climate. All the celeb watching one can tolerate. And of course, the huge mural of a Louboutin stiletto on Sunset.

I love that this massive (10 stories tall?) image of a stunning heel was created in collaboration with street artist Galo Make Canote on the side of an otherwise unsightly building. You LA dwellers certainly know how to welcome a fellow to town. That's right, the massive billboard was created to properly greet Mr. Louboutin to Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills on February 3. And, of course, to drum up press mentions just like this one. I'd say it's working.

Those of you who are going to the event, be sure to give Chris a big squeeze from me, okay?

Design: The Third Layer

I just uncovered a charming interview with the newest member of Team Zoe (no, not adorably dressed little Skylar), Jeremiah Brent.

During the last Bravo season of the show, Brent was introduced as a new stylist. To say it took him a while to gain footing is an understatement. True, at an operation like Rachel Zoe Inc, there's no time to learn the ropes. You must somehow magically come in at your top performing level and require little to no assistance or guidance.

Sound unreasonable? yes, but in small companies like hers (and any currently am or have been a part of) that's just how it is. Jump in with both feet, both arms and swim like a fish... or you'll quickly find yourself cast aside. It's just how lean operations work.

In Jeremiah's case, he was attempting to break into a new field. He's an interior designer at heart and by experience. Is there some crossover between chandeliers and chandelier earrings? Yes... but Team Zoe operates at a higher echelon than simply taking a fitting room job at Bergdorf Goodman. There are careers at stake, reputations at hand and carefully handled professional relationships at risk.

In the end, his true calling in interiors won him a seat at the glossy white Zoe table. He masterfully decorated Rachel's private home (with an incomprehensible two week time limit), created a posh haven for baby Skylar with little or no direction and ultimately sealed the deal with his concept for the brand's store-in-store spaces within Bloomingdales.

I love that Roger and Rachel found a way to leverage Jeremiah's true gifts. He's been designing spaces since he was a child. He shares in the interview that his true talent lies in his ability to create that often missed "third layer" of a space. The elements of an office, bedroom or boutique that take it from pretty to personal. Truthfully, this is the trickiest part of design to master, and for him to recognize this as one of his sharpest skills is very self-aware of him.

Venti Girl Holiday Gift Guide: The Man Who Has It All

According to my husband, a man who arrives a ta certain status in life must develop a robust knowledge and expertise of one or more of the following: good scotch, hunting, cigars, fine watches or golf. Since I'd be hard pressed to select the right set of clubs for him, and the cigars, hunting and scotch are best shared with fellow males, that leaves me with the lovely task of admiring pretty timepieces.

The latest in my long list of potential candidates is the Ball Trainmaster One Hundred Twenty. Much like my husband, it has classic styling with modern functionality. According to Luxist, this collector's edition luxe watch features a "very shock resistant and antimagnetic case (here in 18k rose gold and 39.5mm wide), as well as use of tritium gas tubes in the hour markers and hands. These tubes are filled with a naturally glowing material for perfect darkness reading for about two decades before the light begins to dim."

Why he'll love it: he'll be able to see the time in the dark of the night and can knock this around without fear of it losing its functionality or handsome good looks.

What I like about it: it's handsome, yet pretty. The clean face features sapphire crystal and is attached to wither a brown or black crocodile strap.

What I'm afraid to discover: the price. I've not seen the actual list price listed online anywhere.

Mundane to Marvelous

When I think of successful people in whose footsteps I'd love to follow, those with lifestyle brands are always front of mind. I previously lumped Trina Turk in with successful forces in the fashion industry. Even her line of outdoor fabrics counted as fashion to me, as it seemed a natural extension of her wildly successful prints normally seen on dresses and other items from her apparel line.

But look at her now. Firmly standing with one foot deeply rooted in fashion (including preppy menswear) and the other reaching deeper and deeper into interiors. No longer limited to just pillows, Trina's colorful world now contains candles, stationery, bedding and other household items. What kind, you ask? It might surprise you to discover that she offers such common items such as the dustpan. Leave it to this master of print and pattern to enliven humble household items and elevate them to superstar status. Scissors? Measuring tape? A toolbox? You bet. And they're pretty good looking to boot.

So what about you? What master of their field or mogul do you wish to emulate? Who in your view has blazed a professional trail worthy of admiration?

For me it's those with a brand beneath them. Actual objects with their brand name boldly emblazoned on them. Kelly Wearstler. Trina. Suzanne Kasler. DVF. These are the first names that come to mind, as well as the always on top Barbara Barry. It's about taking the design within and seeing it on shelves and on pretty tables. It's about the realization of a lifelong dream.

From Cover to Cover

When I gaze at my office book shelves I see that they are lined with terrific books. Not surprisingly, most of the titles are published by none other than Rizzoli. Again and again they produce masterful written works that caprivate the fashion and design savvy audience. Just when I think I have enough, I see a lengthy list of new releases that have me salivating.

Case in point... yesterday marked the release of the highly anticipated Christian Louboutin book. Swoon! Cannot wait to possess this incredible work. I love that Christian himself was disappointed the tome couldn't contain ALL of his glorious creations. I sense volume two won't be far behind. Be sure to get your manicured hands on what is sure to be a collector's piece.

Next up, Louis Vuitton: Architecture and Interiors. Could this get any better? My love of fashion, luxe craftsmanship and my interior design combined in one hardbound cover. Any of you who delight in the fanciful design of retail spaces and a brand's impact on architecture will surely covet this book. If you've traveled abroad (especially to Japan) you'll see just how dramatically Louis Vuitton has transformed the retail experience both inside and out.

And finally, the grande dame herself... Carine Roitfield. If ever a woman caused ripples in fashion and business, it's Carine. Considered a visionary and muse to many fashion giants, this controversial Vogue editrix opens up and shares French Vogue editorial tearsheets, behind-the-scenes look at campaign shoots and even an offers us an inside view into her creative thought process and sensibility. Carine Roitfield: Irreverent is a book I, a student of fashion and the imposing figures who shape the landscape of the business, must read.

Bring a tote to lug away all of those terrific hardback books. These are more than just pretty coffee table books to decorate a space, they are incredible published works you'll want to devour when you have a free moment. They are indeed seriously delicious.

Fresh Prince, Indeed

I knew Will & Jada had it going on. But I had no idea they lived in the Garden of Eden. Have you seen this spread in Architectural Digest? See that gazebo in the final photo? Will says the right answers just "come to him" out there. Talk about a private oasis. I am absolutely swooning over their living room, though. Architectural goodness courtesy of Stephen Samuelson only adds to the incredible view the room affords. I could lose myself in this space for hours. It is, as Jada says, "earthy and organic" but it oozes modern sophistication. All I can say is that hard work has paid off for one of the biggest self-made men in Hollywood. This 25,000 square foot home is a testament to the power of a dream, goals and a persistent, urgent need to be the very best you can be. Fresh indeed.

Mellon Drops

Although it's against my brain wiring to want to "be" anyone else, there are certain persons for whom I might bend those rules a bit just to see how it felt to be them for a day. Take Tamara Mellon for a moment. Where to we begin? Legs for miles, a head for business, head of a famed Jimmy Choo empire, a shoe collection every girl dreams of (after all, if it's missing from her shoe wardrobe she simply designs it and - voila! - it appears in the product lineup and invariably in her closet. And then there's the matter of her NYC apartment. I can't stop gawking over it. More importantly, she's powerful, fun woman with a social calendar build to actually put those glamorous things to use.

Fortunately for me, an out of body experience isn't necessary. With a little focus I too can build a Choo Choo train of shoes to line my closet walls. And I can certainly recreate a few elements from her swanky Manhattan pad and equally swanky lifestyle.

First, there's the matter of that light fixture in her living room. Do you see it? I can't take my eyes from it. I love it. I need it. I want it. Right over my desk. Jewelry for the ceiling. It is nothing short of hot.It seems to be a George Kovacs fixture, although it is remarkably similar to this Janice Minor fixture as well. Regardless: it is mine. And that gets me one step closer to lifting some of her swanky style.

And since I'm in "King Midas" mode, loving every gold thing in sight,we might as well head on over to 1stDibs.com and see what else I can find to get me felling Mellon-y. These Maison Jansen nesting tables ought to do it. But since Tamara has a predeliction for wild things, I suspect this ram's head coffee table would be a fron runner in her shopping spree. After all, her enviable desk is made from a brass ram's head base - and it is to die for. But let's focus on the piece de resistance... her iconic white tufted leather sofa. Id you're really going for her look, it's a must. This one from 1stDibs should do nicely.

Add in a dash of apple green, sequins and towering heels and you've got the perfect Mellon Drop cocktail. Stay tuned as we stalk more celebrity homes and choose some of the key elements of style necessary to recreate those look. Ciao, bella!

Oh, Martyn

Watching Mission Dollar Decorators has highlighted two things: 1) supreme confidence is absolutely necessary in an interior designer. 2) Martyn, Kathryn & Mary are true rock stars. The other cast members offer me entertainment and add levity to the show, but the heavy lifting is clearly done by Mary, Kathryn and the ever-charming Martyn. I love them all and admire their design prowess each week.

In terms of aesthetic I fall clearly in "camp Mary". But Martyn has this magnetic pull and a seemingly effortless way of conjuring up his masterpieces. While some spaces are quite loud, he does exercise quiet luxe from time to time.

Do enjoy these photos from his site. And by all means... please tell me you're as hooked on this revealing show as I am. I'm certain I'm not alone in my appreciation of the show. It is refreshing to see (for once) what really goes on behind the scenes of installations, sourcing and planning. Granted we see only a small portion of the process, but some pressures and challenges are universal. It's nice, therefore, to see that even celebrity designers are not immune to pressure to perform.

I will say this about Martyn. he has absolute range. I think I know his brash style (think Sharon Osbourne's LA apartment) and then he wows me with a sinfully seductive room like that for Daisy Fuentes. He is versatile and has a wide range of experience to pull from.

Something About Mary

Currently studying: Mary McDonald's portfolio. Before Million Dollar Decorators aired I "knew of" her but hadn't stopped to examine every morsel of her talent. (Isn't Bravo a wonderful thing?) She's a force of nature. Mad design skills, a velvet glove approach to handling business situations (with clients and staff) as well as an accomplished author, tweeter & product designer. Can you stay unstoppable? Yes, I think you can.

Sweet Life, Indeed!

Thank you so much, Paloma, for featuring my future home on your blog. This is a composite of the elements I must have in house when I "grow up" (that's entrepreneur-speak for striking billionaire status). Yes, it's in Southern Cali... and you can bet she's one fabulous manse. Take a looksie! For more details, see the posts filed under "things to do before I die" - it spills all the juicy details!

This is an incredible series that Paloma has been running (P, exactly how do you juggle so much at once?) allowing us to peer into the hopes, dreams, plans and aspirations of fellow bloggers. I think it's a wonderful idea and it was a bit more challenging to find photos than I'd imagined. Once you begin plotting your course, however, it's all quite easy.

First rule of success: know what you want. So simple, right? Without a SPECIFIC goal in mind (like this house) you'll never hit your mark. My suggestion? Dream it, find pix of it, write out those goals and purchase the biggest inspiration board you can possibly find - then fill it with images (detailed images) of your "wants" and your "gotta have it or I might just die" elements. Place it over your desk, on your wall or wherever you'll see it every single day. It's not going to do you any favors living behind your closet door. Show Me Your Dallas, Shay Geyer

Ask a native Dallas girl to show you her city, and you'll need to brace yourself for a whirlwind of an adventure. Shay Geyer, daughter of remarkable designer & entrepreneur Beth Rafferty, took on the challenge with glee. We began our busy day at IBB Design, the family-owned showroom where she spends her days. If you're wondering, the "B" in IBB stands for Beth. Shay is second-generation Dallas design royalty and it shows in everything she does.

The showroom itself offers two floors of some of the best brands in the furniture business. Shay and I have had the pleasure of meeting a few times in High Point. We're both guilty of spending too much time in the Hickory Chair showroom. That appreciation for fine quality is reflected in the pieces on display at her business. Room upon room of beautifully styled vignettes featuring Henredon, Maitland-Smith, Century, Barclay Butera, Thomas O'Brien & Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair and other greats humble even the most seasoned ASID member.

IBB itself is a full service interior design business. The showroom serves as both retail showroom and to-the-trade resource, making it a must-see for anyone with a penchant for design. I've been in a few times myself, but never seem to canvas the entire property. When you go, don't miss the glistening John Richard room. {Insider tip: Don't see what you're looking for? Ask for a peek inside the attached warehouse and prepare to have your breath taken away.}

Next, we ventured to the Design District for a visit to one of her favorite art galleries, Samuel Lynne Galleries. Shay expressed such fondness for the works of JD Miller, a "reflectionist" (his words) who is the great mind behind a method he refers to as acrylic sculpting. Rather than flat, framed works, JD's pieces have a true depth to them that makes them almost leap from the canvas. We were blessed to discover he was in that morning, and he was gracious enough to share his methodology and his inspiration.

As lovely as his work was (and it is glorious) it was the artist's personality and warmth that made me an instant fan. he believes that we are all responsible for producing positivity and good energy. His works are his way of giving out what he seeks to return. Just listening to him speak was enough to make me want to rush home and begin expressing my own good works.

For a real treat, be sure to attend a live in-studio event on May 21. JD will demonstrate his signature 3-D oil technique from 6-9 that evening. It's an experience you surely will not want to miss. RSVP here.

After seeing so much color and beauty, it was going to be difficult for our next stop to impress. But leave it to a Dallas event to blow away any predetermined expectations. Just after the clock struck noon we were elbow to elbow with fellow fashionistas at Stephanie Anne in Highland Park Village. If any city honors it's own, it's Dallas. Stephanie Anne is a multi-talented designer with a remarkable eye for style. She transformed her home accessory showroom into a DJ-spinning, champagne serving charity fête. We were in another world the moment we walked in the door.

The Super 10 Event served two purposes: it introduced her new line of glamorous jewelry and supported 10 remarkable charities. As attendees sipped cocktails and chatted, we were treated to a fashion show of her colorful and flowy jersey dresses and her impressively hand-crafted gold jewelry. Think: Egyptian royalty and you're almost there. Her pieces reminded me of those found on Pharoahs in ancient Egypt. This is no ordinary collection, and Stephanie Anne (by coincidence, a St. Louis native) is no ordinary entrepreneur. These 24K gold-dipped pieces are sure to be a hit.

As a fellow entrepreneur, I can't wait to see what she launches next. It's fun to see someone turn their stylish vision into reality. Swing by the glamorous boutique to see the pieces in person. Or... take note that Neiman Marcus will also be carrying her fine, fabulous pieces. Stephanie, I'll be seeing you again soon!

Like two modern-day Cinderellas, Shay and I soon realized that 1:30 was upon us and we had to return to reality. Translation: in the middle of this fun day of play and projects we have little ones, both of whom were due to be picked up from school in minutes. Our moments in crystal slippers were fading quickly and it was time to jump back to reality. Time to roll!

Looking back, I'm not sure how Shay does it all. Later that night she headed back out for an industry party honoring the launch of D Home Magazine's new blog. She's a very busy girl and I appreciated her taking time out to show me her version of the city. She's deeply woven into the fabric of this city's busy social scene and effortlessly glides from one role to the next.

Shay, thank you for such a fun outing. I look forward to our next adventure, as I know you still have dozens of fun locations up your sleeve! Hopefully we'll have a bit more time!

Yes, please. Add this to the list.

There are a few things on my "do before I die" list. Aside from seeing the Galapagos and seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza at dawn (the travel list is way long), I'd also like a few "girly" and materialistic accomplishments. I'd love to be featured in InStyle sitting amidst my closet of surrounded by my fabulous bags and shoes and dresses. Ahhhhh, yes. But seeing Sheryl Crow standing proudly in her Hollywood Hills home makes me realize a few things. One: I desperately need to live in California (something I've known for years). Two: I want the revitalized AD or Elle Decor to feature my next home.

We just relocated but are leasing for a year or two until we choose "the" house. Moving is exhausting and expensive. This next home? We'll live there for many, many, many years. While we'll own vacation homes, we do not plan to move from this next "super house" for a very long time. And I have to tell you...Sheryl's house is quite special. Although I love clean lines and modern conveniences, I've always had a deep soft spot for the Spanish hacienda style abodes that line the coast of Southern California. Tiles floors, arched doorways, wrought iron railings and a sense of inside marrying outside via terraces, patios and courtyards.

Let's start with that sectional please. No, my, God! It is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Tuxedo arms, tufted back, bench seating. It's the Ginebra sectional from 22 Bond Street. And it is FABULOUS and the embodiment of what I'm currently seeking. (Here's more on that beauty.)

But look at her sparkling pool and sweeping views. Sheryl, how about a live-in stylist? We can dish fashion, interiors and all things girly. I'll keep refining the look of your fabulous space and allow the rooms to evolve as your tastes change.

Back to this amazing property. As much as I adore my home state here, no place in the US compares to the lushness and natural beauty of California. Mr. venti lived in LA and there's probably no way I can drag him back there to live. But he has agreed that it'd be a great place to own a vacation home. Hollywood HIlls, Pacific Palisades... those are a few places that are undeniably gorgeous. Just far enough away from the craziness that is downtown LA to create your own oasis. And when we do... AD. you can bet I'll come calling & asking you to swing by. Oh, and by then I'll be more than ready for InStyle to do that expose on my closet. Maybe Sheryl can even swing by too.

Feathering Your Nest

Nothing personalizes a room like art. It establishes your taste. It indicates your passions. It delights you. It intrigues you. It pleases you. With all of these great reasons to surround yourself with artwork I'm surprised so many of us don't. Affordability is no longer an excuse thanks to outlets like eBay and etsy where aspiring (read: sensibly priced) art can be found. In terms of judging good art from bad, the only thing that matters it speaks to you.

For many years my true art passion was sculpture and black & white photography. Lately, however, I feel so moved by color. I'm inspired to move to the canvas and fill my walls with pieces I create. I love charcoal sketches. I adore figure drawings. I love line art and fashion illustrations. If you can frame it, hand it or stretch it onto quality canvas I'm in heaven.And it's a skill I've let slide sue to work, interests, growing up, being busy... you name it.

As I surfed for fabulous images to illustrate my point (in more ways that one) I came across Tobi Fairley's 2011 goals. Amazing how similar hers were to mine. I've noticed all of my blogger/designer girlfriends are fiendishly working, building our brands, barely taking time to breathe. We are self-professed high achievers. We set goals and we accomplish them. We want it all and we are going for it. We're investing our hearts and souls into our work - our passion - but we're often losing that balance (or at the very least the sleep) we so desire.

This year I commit to spending more time pursuing my passions (creating art, making more time for photography and creating Blurb books from the best photos) and seizing the moment. The days flew by last year. I don't want that to happen in 2011. I want to be present. I want to be in the moment. More importantly, I want to document my life and adorn my walls with evidence of a life richly lived.

For me, art does this. Painting does this. Sketching delivers this. I'm away from the laptop. I'm in my "element" and I am in the zone. It puts me under somewhat of a spell and helps me tap into parts of my brain that I am often to busy to hear. Right now I need that kind of an outlet.

I've found that by stepping back for those moments to be in my own element I am actually more alive, more present and more engaged when I'm with others. It isn't a selfish act at all. In fact, it would be more selfish to not pursue those interests and tap into my true creativity.

If you've abandoned a passion of yours lately due to a busy schedule or mismanaged time, it's time. Write that book. Make those calls. Take that trip. Wherever you passion leads you - follow. Your work, your family and your friendships will all be enriched by the journey.

Personal Freedom

Life in interesting. I noticed that the first year I worked for myself - really worked outside of corporate walls - my "true" personality fully emerged. All those years playing nice-nice and deftly working office politics resulted in a more muted version of me. Dress codes, corporate policies, internet usage protocols, meetings, break room etiquette, schedules... all part of the "work as a team" package. Imagine not having to abide by anyone else's rules or standards. That's freedom.

A few months into my journey I was shockingly aware that the fullness and realness of me had arrived. I laughed more, played more, worked more, delivered more and certainly learned more than ever before. The "real me" as Carrie Bradshaw would say had so fully come about that I could (and would) never again hide my shine from the world. Five years later and it's clear to me that the changes are irreversible. Never again will it be possible to work in the confines of a personality stifling office.

Surely this isn't the case for everyone, but for me - a very creative individual who might just be a wee bit too full of energy and a zeal for life - office living doesn't work. For me to fully embrace my creativity, my passion for fashion, my love of design and my desire to express myself fully it took building my own business. Maybe the changes simply coincided with personal growth that would have occurred anyway. Maybe building a personal brand changed me. Maybe the changes were inevitable. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that I'm free, I'm fabulously happy and it's empowering to create your own future.

Is it easy? No. Nothing worthwhile ever is easy. And I wouldn't want it to be without challenges. I savor the difficult projects and the ~~occasional~~ frequent long hours because it gives me great satisfaction to invest so fully in myself and in my future. If you give of yourself completely and bring passion and purpose to every engagement, success won't hide from you for long. Is it an awe inspiring responsibility? Holding your own future in your hands? Yes. But I wouldn't trade it for all the Herman Miller chairs and break room Starbucks coffee in the world.

On this long holiday weekend I find myself taking a step back to marvel at the journey of my life and appreciating my own personal braveness. Life is fun if you seize it. A good life - a full, exciting life - involves risk, periods of uncertainty and a complete trust in your instincts.

Do you want to know what defines true success? Being the best that you yourself can be. It's not about living to meet anyone else's standards. It's not about making 10% more than your neighbors. It's not about having what someone else has or wanting what someone else covets. It's about achieving all that you yourself can achieve. Being your own personal best. Nothing else will deliver such satisfaction.

Happy independence day everyone. I hope you create a terrific weekend for yourself. Relish and delight in your personal freedom. You deserve it.

Rise to the Occasion

This morning as I took a walk I was thinking about personal standards. What's completely acceptable to one person may seem outrageous to another. In life, we typically stay within the range of what we feel is "acceptable" to us. You stay pretty close to the weight and level of fitness you feel meets your image of yourself... your standards. You date, marry and befriend people you feel are like you or "on your level." Subconsciously you live at the income level or professional level that you think you "deserve" in life. The image in your mind you have of yourself and your life is indeed the life you live. If you don't believe that, you're living in blissful denial.

So... what happens when what you want, isn't what you currently have? You must change your mind. You must alter what you find acceptable. You must raise your standards. That's right... change your mind and you'll change your reality. Stick to it... decide exactly what you want to achieve or experience... determine WHY you need or want that to be your reality... and then figure out what you need to do to get there. But this is no time for autopilot. You have to take consistent action - or at least have constant focus on the goal - to get there.

The good news is this: once you raise your standards the rest is easy. For example, I would never, ever cheat on my spouse. Never have.. never will. It's unacceptable to me. So is a filthy house or an out of shape body. These images just don't fit the image of myself I have in my mind. They are beneath my personal standards. It's just something I don't ever think about because it isn't part of my personal mental image of myself. Those beliefs I hold, those self portraits in my mind cause me on a consistent basis to focus on my husband workout and clean my house. Silly examples.. but you get my point. My standards for myself cause me to do certain things but not others. If I raise my standards I'll improve those situations. Make sense?

The same could be said of any element in life. Are you behaving in a way you don't like? Are you living beneath your personal capabilities or potential? Are you coasting along living a life someone else has mapped out for you? Are you limiting your own potential? This isn't about others around you. This is about you... you as an individual. Your friends may have different standards. Your peers might not be destined for the same greatness you'll achieve. Your job isn't to "fit in" with those around you... your obligation to yourself and to the world is to be the best that YOU can be.

So... are you doing that right now? Are you living up to your own ideal? Are you focused on the right things? Are you working towards your ultimate oals in life? If not... why? Maybe... just maybe it's time for you to raise your standards.

Eye of the Tiger

Kim Cattrall, my favorite saucy blonde bombshell, was the special guest at the Park Avenue D. Porthault boutique last night. Our saucy vixen happens to be a close personal friend of the owners and she may very well be responsible for the resurgence of the popular "le tigre" print. The sexy linens will make an appearance in Samantha's home in SATC2. Kim was so taken with the fabric that she felt it was right at home in her character's on-screen life. What an interesting place in her career - to be able to influence the set designers to such a degree! The chic affair wasn't just to shine the light on the lovely Kim, however. Another glamorous girl was being fussed over as well. Owner Joan Carl was being celebrated for her general fabulousness and for receiving Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur. What's that, you ask? From what I can gather, it one of the highest levels of recognition possible by the French government. Tres chic! She and a very select group of women received the award last week in D. C. Talk about cause for a fabulous fête! Enjoy the lovely shots of the beautiful blondes and luxurious linens. Party season is in full swing!

Calling a Spade a Spade

For some reason I never fully bought into the Kate Spade craze. I'm not sure why, as hers is a charming story. Midwestern girl sees niche market in the world of handbags. Goes from main street to Park Avenue seemingly overnight. It's the quintessential American Dream story. Fast forward to today, many years after her now famous "overnight success" story. Today she's a household name and is almost overexposed and too commonplace in my opinion. Most days her shockingly bright poppy-coated handbags and plucky apparel does little for me. Her advertising on the other hand.... her advertising is fantastic. She (or at least her PR & marketing team) have made the transition from selling merchandise to selling a lifestyle. And that, my dear, is what's winning me over. I've recently obtained a lovely pair of pink rainboots thanks to the divine Mrs. Spade... and if a promo code passes my way you bet your sweet buns I'll be snapping up one or two pieces from her Gold Coast collection. Much like Tory Burch's collections, I don't give a passing glance to most of Kate's designs. Yes, they are pretty and fun - but they just aren't "me." But once in a while she really ratchets up the glam factor and draws me into her vortex. The quilted metallic in the Gold Coast collection are pretty, fun and timeless. No oversized florals here. No polka dots. No stripes. Just sophisticated and classic designs. Maybe Kate is selling the jetset lifestyle I long for after all!

Between the Sheets

More and more, people are turning to quality and time honored tradition over flash in the pan brands. In the luxury linen category, Porthault is difficult to rival. Born in the depression era, the brand is known for it's pretty patterns and dainty prints. You won't find bold Pucci-esque designes here, these delicate designs are scree-printed by hand. In an age when almost everything is being mass produced, Porthault has lovingly made these since 1925. Brands with a legacy like theirs deserve the cult following they enjoy.
Jackie O, the divine SJP and Coco Chanel herself have been fans of the brand. More recently, our bold and beloved James has become a fixture on the Park Avenue location's showroom floor. What I love best about the collection is that it exudes understated luxury. Everyone may have heard of Frette, but mention D. Porthault at your alumni meeting and your well heeled peers will know you've made something of yourself since graduation. Expect to see a few well-groomed eyebrows being raised (well, raising as much as a Botoxed brow is capable anyway).

A set of sheets for your King-sized bed will set you back $4600. That may seem steep, but you spend a third of your life between the sheets, so don't underestimate the impac that quality linens offers. For the holidays you may consider treating yourself (or your fabulous mom) to a handful of momogrammed shoe bags. You'll protect your Louboutins and boost the swank factor up your closet simultaneously. If that seems indulgent, realize that you'll use those bags every time you travel to protect your shoes inside the suitcase.
For those of you deep in the heart of Texas, I suggest you visit their Dallas location (Emily of Material Girls took the lovely photo above at the Highland Park Village location) for a truly glamorous experience. Word of caution: expect to start "needing" those sheets once you feel their supple texture!

Globetrotters

It's November. Almost halfway through the month. The year is close to being over and I can see that we've fallen prey to "someday syndrome" this year. We've discussed at least half a dozen great vacations. Done the research, selected the hotels, planned the outfits... and then decided we were too busy. We keep putting it off until an easier month, a less hectic quarter.

Running a business is demanding... what with never ending meetings and projects. If you look at the calendar it's always full... but I have to admit to myself that's really our fault. It's time we blocked out some time for ourselves and sat in wonder of the world around us. Gained a bit of perspective. It's been a terrific year and it's time we sat back and reflected upon the wonder of life.

If I'm being completely honest I'll need to admit that my criteria for a vacation increases each time we delay the trip. So while I once might have been satisfied with a charming boutique hotel, now I'm in need of the luxe appointments and guaranteed fabulousness that only a St. Regis resort or Ritz Carlton can deliver. This particular resort (of the St. Regis variety) is on picturesque Kauai located in Hanalei Bay. If the stunning views don't woo you, maybe the chic interiors designed by David Easton will seduce your senses.

As for me, I think waking up to the glorious views - and not the glow of my laptop - will do wonders for restoring my soul. Well, that and a few seaweed wraps and hot stone massages overlooking the crashing waves.

I'm setting a plan in motion today: plan it, book it, do it. If there's something you've been putting off, wake out of that coma and get moving. Time waits for no man.

Suzanne Kasler's Effortless Glamour

I've been giving it more thought and come up with a great way to describe the three designers from the Hickory Chair event. Here goes: Thomas O'Brien is the designer you want on your team for Trivial Pursuit. Although I did not quiz him, I'm certain he could regale you with detailed stories of historical events just as easily as he could recite Yeats without a moment's hesitation.

Alexa Hampton is the girl you want on your Pictionary team. She's bold, vivacious and wouldn't think twice about performing in front of a crowd. I adored her energy and her contagious laughter. Alexa is a girl who knows how to enjoy herself, and it shows. Having said that, she, Suzanne and Thomas could go head to head on their exhaustive and comprehensive knowledge of the origins of design and the history of furnishings. Each of them shared such a rich passion for design and the classical references of each piece in their collections at Hickory Chair. It was beyond impressive. (more on Alexa in an upcoming post!)But let's talk about my favorite girl's girl of the bunch: Suzanne Kasler. Where do I begin? Suzanne is a woman blessed with radiant warmth. She's gracious, feminine and absolutely charming. Standing in the midst of her gorgeous collection in the showroom, it was clear that the sheer beauty of the pieces themselves was a direct expression of her inner glamour and her ability to translate that sophistication into three dimensional forms.

So if I'm continuing my theme of games I'd play with each designer, Suzanne would certainly be my partner for a game of dress up - as silly as that sounds. She's so warm and inviting that you immediately feel you could spend a full day weaving through the cobblestone streets of Rome in search of the perfect dress. You'd laugh at yourselves as you tripped on the cobblestone along the Via Condotti. Inevitably, you'd find yourselves losing track of time as the afternoon passed. You've chatted so much and admired cultural surroundings so much you'd nearly forgotten to shop. The two of you would share stories as you sipped your afternoon espressos at Sant'Eustachio (the best espresso in Rome, in my opinion!). And you'd continue the fun through dinner and well after dessert at the most quaint local restaurant, barely noticing the waiters who would no doubt be trying to catch her attention. Yes, she's that approachable and that remarkably beautiful. You meet her.. you feel you've known her for ages. She has a sort of quiet charisma that pulls you in and akes you take notice.If you haven't familiarized yourself with her work, I recommend you take a peek at my post from the spring, peruse her recent collection for Hickory Chair and most certainly pick up a copy of her latest book, Inspired Interiors. I've still clinging to my signed copy (woohoo!), thinking it might be nice to read over coffee on a quiet afternoon. (Rome, anyone?)

In spring I was overcome by the sheer beauty of her icy blue color palette with gold accents. A chinoiserie inspired look. This season's palette featured an invigorating orange, perfect for fall, but timeless on it's own accord. I can hardly stop thinking about this stunningly simply orange leather chair. It strikes me as the ideal perch from which to write - espeically if paired with one of her sexy desks. Yowza!

As I look back on my experience with Suzanne, I can't help but feel that she has altered my view of the typical successful businesswoman. She embodies a certain quiet confidence and graciousness I haven't often encountered. As I observe all that she has achieved and the body of work she has produced, I realize that never for a moment was she anything less that generous with her time and sincere in her interest of the talents of others.It's that same grace that can be seen in her work. Her furnishings are lovingly designed and exude quiet elegance. They are feminine without being frilly. Warm and approachable without being casual. Elegant and wise without losing that fresh edge. Full of authority without the use of any visible force. Much like the woman herself, the pieces feel inviting, as if they're good friends you can't wait to spend more time around. If you have the opportunity, be sure to go to a Kasler book signing near you. I promise it will be an experience you won't soon forget. You'll meet a fascinating woman and acquire a fabulous book at the same time!

Thomas O'Brien: The Thinking Man's Designer

Funny how certain people strike you as extraordinary. Persons teeming with so much star quality that they'd have been famous whether they drilled oil or worked in a paper factory. Thomas O'Brien is certainly one of those rare individuals with "change maker" written all over him. He enters the room and the energy shifts. It's a wonderful quality and I found his frenetic energy quite refreshing.

Last Saturday night I had the rare opportunity to share a meal with Thomas and a small group of other bold-faced names in a private dining room in High Point, North Carolina. (For the record, what he ordered looked far better than my choice.. but I digress...) As you surely know if you've read Paloma, Heather or Cassandra's posts, we enjoyed the company of Suzanne Kasler, Ron Fiore and the impossibly fun Alexa Hampton. And while it seemed the entire room was abuzz with conversation, I suspect our table might have been the most rambunctious of the bunch. Between me, Ron, Thomas, Karen (Thomas's PR guru), Keith (Thomas's right hand man) and my husband, I can safely say we were not a quiet bunch! To say that we had a great time would be an understatement!

The thing about Thomas that stood out to me was how he simultaneously embodied such precision and absolute chaos. Everything about him is a study in contrasts. His perfectly tailored clothing, masterfully tossed on with a devil may care attitude. His mathematically precise furnishings that somehow still ooze laid-back ease and comfort. His freshly cut hair that's haphazardly coiffed - making you suspect he only had moments to fix it, but it looks great regardless. Anyway you look at it, Thomas enjoys the dichotomy of his (and my) Gemini personality. Fully controlled, drawn to precision, a total perfectionist - and yet a total riot and easy to be around. Spend a moment in his company and you'll find yourself laughing hysterically. His quick wit and sheer breadth of knowledge makes him a powerhouse personality. Trust me, you notice when this guy walks into a room. And you'd better be prepared.

Back to my story... dinner was amazing. The group of us laughed so hard we nearly cried. And the next morning Thomas and the other designers walked us through the Hickory Chair showroom discussing their respective collections. It would be difficult to overstate how well informed Thomas is about design. He understands scale, historical significance, functionality and attention to detail in ways many of us can only dream. Much of his influence comes fro his New England upbringing. He recalls the furnishings of his childhood home and appreciates quality pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. This all very clearly translates in his work. Each piece easily can stand on its own and could be repurposed in near limitless arrangements in almost any room of the home.

Clearly, the collection is beautiful. A classic settee covered in a tweedy menswear fabric was completely modern and fresh in a strangely familiar way. A geometric sectional finished with touchably plush upholstery straddled the line between masculine and feminine design perfectly. It was all absolutely flawless and just slightly "off" in that uniquely TOB way. If you can imagine staying with well-heeled friends in the Hamptons for the weekend in a house that exudes relaxed elegance - that's how every piece of the Thomas O'Brien collection reads. Utterly fabulous and over the top in a completely approachable and familiar way... much like the man himself. Genius.

Bump, Bump, Bump

As you know, I'm a big fan of savvy business ideas. Isabella Oliver (my saving grace when I was pregnant) realized that they were only capturing the market for nine months out of their customers' lives. Nine paltry months. So, clever Brits that they are, they expanded the collection for those of us without baby bumps.
If you've never seen these in person, don't feel bad. It's a UK brand that is not very well known here in the states. I read about it on a celeb blog and instantly knew why it was a cult favorite. The pieces are sexy, body hugging and not the least bit "mom jean" oriented. Imagine that... clothes designed to showcase the female form, not hide it. How novel. ;)
Seems Vogue and Marie Claire are finally hip the brand, which means you better get yours before the price goes up. If you want to know about quality I will tell you, the Isabella Oliver jersey puts Rachel Pally's fabrics to shame. Sorry, but it's true. These garments are made to outlast you, so choose pieces you want to wear again... and again... and again.
Shouldn't be too difficult with glam silhouettes like these. If you want to know how I really love to dress, this is it. I love my clothes fitted, fluid and glamorous. Unfussy. I'm not a "pressed shirt" kind of girl. These are "go anywhere" garments and I adore them. Plus, they look just as amazing pulled out a suitcase as they do being hung in your closet with breathing room. I love not getting "lost" in my clothing. Dressed should showcasr the body, not hide it. Isabella seems to design for my way of living. Maybe it will be your way as well.

Friday, I'm in Love

Ahhhh.. it's Friday! I'm wrapping up what has been a very rewarding week. In fact, I feel such a sense of accomplishment that I'm going to reward myself by chillaxing all weekend. It even seems the weather is conspiring with me on this one. It's been raining for two days straight and is so unsuitable for play that I'm practically being forced to curl up with my stack of unready magazines, a cup of decaf and a nauseatingly sweet chick flick. Yes... it's shaping up to be just the reprieve I need after several months of crushingly hard schedules and deadlines.
In light of my "no effort" mood, I'm taking the easy way out today with this post. These beautiful pieces were spotted on Rebecca Taylor's site. She's a perennial favorite designer of mine. Feminine, classic and just body-conscious enough. Love these pretty looks, and I hope you enjoy them as well.

Just Say Yes

We just finished watching Yes Man, the recent Jim Carrey release. I've got to admit, the message isn't lost on me. Saying yes to what life places before you is a very Zen approach to life, and one I've been encountering more and more these days. In many of the books on my nightstand I've noticed a recurring theme, that good things are trying to come your way if you'll oly let them. That it's often you stand in the way of your own success. And if you'll stop fighting the current and go with it you'll discover that your life experience is so much better than the one you were fighting to establish.

This doesn't sound very compatible with achievement and goal setting...but are they in fact diametrically opposed? I'm not so sure. What opportunities would life place your way if you just stopped resisting? If you didn't hesitate each time you received an invitation, where would that leg of the journey carry you? What if those invitations, chances and opportunities are the answers to your master plan? What if each time you said yes to what seems to be a random event, it was actually putting you closer to your goals?

Saying yes doesn't mean you're an agreeable flake that doesn't make their own decisions. It seems the secret is to consciously choose to try new things that seemed like roadblocks before. It means adding more adventure, more fun and more experimentation to your experience.

I'm going to add "yes" to my process right now. Yes to opportunities that seem like diversions. Yes to chances that seem anathema to my goals. Yes to life's opportunities. Things are going so swimmingly well right now, that it seems like the perfect time. I'm not fighting the current. I'm not forcing things. So let's see if this added bit of Eastern flair makes an impact in my Western approach to success.

Be One of the Few Who Do

Last night I felt inspired to ask a random question on twitter: "Wondering: do you have goals or just wishes?" It seemed to have struck a chord with people. There's a wide gulf between wishes and goals, my friends. A very wide gulf indeed.

This week I'm working on fine tuning my future plans. I journal out my vision of my "ideal life" in as detailed a manner as possible. Where I'd like to live, what it will be like to entertain, what I'll feel like, what I'll wear, where we'll vacation, what we'll do for fun, what we'll do for fulfillment. Details. Tiny details. These aren't wishes. These are plans.

How sad to have a book of wishes? You're tapping into vastly different emotions when you conjure up these images and categorize them as wishes. Think about it for a moment. Close your eyes and "hope" you get to work safely this morning. Hope traffic is easy. Hope your engine runs smoothly. Now....what did hope feel like? Did you feel an undercurrent of anxiety? Stress? Did you also see yourself getting to your destination in a less than positive mood?

With "hope" we are leaving the possibility in our minds that this thing we want might not happen. That doesn't feel good. Hope leaves the option of failure.

Let's try it again. Only this time "expect" to get to work just fine. Imagine the sun shining, you're listening to something great on the radio, traffic may be busy but things are going fine. Imagine yourself walking in and being greeted by your coworkers.

Now that's a much better day. Was the traffic, the weather or your office any different? No. But you were. You expected a good day, a great drive and a positive experience. And guess what? You gave yourself one. You're in control of much more than you realize, just use that noggin of yours correctly.

There's a physiology that accompanies stress and one that is present when we expect good things. When you're anxious or "down" about something you use your body differently. But when we are confident and sure of ourselves we stand straight. We feel good inside. We carry our bodies in a way that tells our minds to feel good.

{Don't believe any of this? Have you ever been to a party or a friends house and observed how confidently someone entered the room? They didn't speak a word to you yet, but you were drawn to their body language. They seemed at ease. There is absolutely a mind/body connection going on there.}

And the results are vastly different when we tell our minds to "expect" things. What if you were headed in for surgery. No one wants the surgeon who "hopes" things go well. That guy is nervous inside. I want the surgeon who expects the procedure to go well. He walks taller, comes off more confidently and has steadier hands. You might say this is a subtle difference in language and you'd be right. But just pay attention to how you talk to yourself. If you're wishing or hoping for a lot rather than planning or expecting, you might need a little adjustment.

Stop Majoring in Minor Things

My big week is all about reassessing priorities and making sure I'm not spinning my wheels on the trivial details of this thing we call life.To me the secret to success is organization. I am definitely a list girl. Write a fresh list. Cross things out as you knock them out. And keep going. In fact...I keep a physical notebook for those action items and create a fresh "to-do" list almost daily. Without the list I tend to flail about like a fish without a current. I enjoy the physical act of writing the list (in blue ink, no less) and crossing things off one by one. And since I have a penchant for neatness, once the list becomes too cluttered (with all that crossing off) it looks messy and I begin anew. And again we begin the process.

But I find that lately I'm using my iPhone more and more for life organization. I don't get the tactile thrill of crossing things off my list, but it does a lovely job of allowing me to sync my digital world with my "real" one. And let's face it, I refuse to ever place an ink pen in a handbag again.

There are no shortage of apps out there for keeping track of your life, but a cult favorite with the designerati seems to be Things from Cultured Code. I've been getting along just fine without it, but I'm starting to see how this little investment might be an elegant way to integrate the on and offline worlds.

{Although I am very, very, very emotionally attached to my pretty notebooks and special blue ink pens. So I will probably use Things for business tasks and shopping lists...not my personal priorities and lists. I'd miss seeing my handwriting and crossing those items off the list so very much!}

If you're playing along this week and are knocking trivial or unpleasant things off of your to-do list, realize that once those are completed you can start LIVING that life of yours. You'll no longer be held back by the minor tasks in life. You can focus on what's really important. Start writing that novel, building that online boutique, starting that master's degree program, opening that bakery.

My commitment to myself is to stop majoring in minor things. And if it takes a cool app from the Apple store to do it or just a simple pen and paper solution, then let's get on with it. The big things in your life are waiting.

Hey Donald, You Can Keep That Key Chain

Mr. Trump, if you're reading my blog I thought I'd save you some time. Just go ahead and award me one of those 10 grand prizes. I'm the perfect candidate to receive a copy of your latest book.

Don't believe it? If you have a moment to browse the site I'm sure you'll agree I have vision, ambition and enough moxie to be a worthy recipient. A signed copy of Think Like a Champion is what I'm after. Because I do, in fact, think like a champion and I'd be honored to have a copy in my possession.

If You Want More, More, More...Jump!

This is one of my absolute favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies. Hugh Grant dancing - and being completely embarrassed once caught - in Love Actually. I love thinking that Tony Blair or "Dubya" had this kind of a fun moment on the evening they first won their elections. There's something great about seeing someone's private celebration of victory. (please...please...no political comments...this isn't that kind of blog)

This video kicks off day one of my Change Your Life in Just One Week event. Here is how the week is going to look for me:

Turn it off: no television whatsoever in the evenings. I'll just have to assume Dina will be there when I'm ready to watch her fabulousness next week on Tivo. (I love you, Dina!)

Let it go: I've decided I have to behavioral addictions I need to kick this week. First, shopping. That's right. Unless it's food or gas for my car I won't be shopping this week. No fashion purchases. No shoes, no jeans, no tops, no dresses. Nada. Actually, it's not about buying things or spending. I find very little I actually like enough to purchase. I'm extremely selective and it has to be beyond perfect for me to call it my own. But I need to stop looking for things to covet. I'm always on the prowl for gorgeous new things. I need just one week away from this habit. It's not just time consuming it's joy-robbing. It must stop. (Can I kick it? "yes, you can!")

Next...brewed no coffee after my morning cup. You might be curious about this...I seem to be consuming an odd amount of decaf coffee later in the day. There's nothing good in a cup of decaf coffee, no matter how good the coffee beans are. It's really a cup of creamer and Splenda. This has to go. I have no problem with the occasional afternoon decaf espresso-based Starbucks drink...but this home-brewed business must be put to an end.

Improve Your Life in Just One Week

Once a year I do what I call a life tune-up. I reassess my goals, my plan and make sure I'm on course to achieve that. It's also a good time to give myself an honest once-over and make sure I like what I see. Am I excelling professionally but not calling my mom enough? How is my fitness? Do I like what I see in the mirror? What do I REALLY want to do with my life? Has it changed since last year? Am I getting enough time with my spouse? Are there any bad habits I've let creep into my life? How about my friends? Am I making enough time for them? Too much time?

I genuinely believe you have to design the life you want. Great stories don't just happen. Do you want to be a venture capitalist? (I do.) So where's that money going to come from? What am I going to do with that success? Travel? Develop new businesses? Where will I live? What kind of friends will we have? What do I want that to feel like on a daily basis? Am I doing things RIGHT NOW, every single day to work towards that goal?

I'm telling you this because it's time again. I can feel it. Time to shake things up and make sure I'm on pace to win in life. If you've never thought this way or done such a thing, I'm inviting you to take a look at my process and inviting you to play along. But I'll warn you, it is absolutely life changing. So be prepared to enjoy life better in just seven days.

Happy Birthday To Me!

Yes, lovelies.... it's my birthday today! Yay! This is a short post, as I just shamelessly wanted to say "Yay, me!" It's been a fantastic year, and things are only getting better. Today I'll sleep a bit later, laugh a bit more easily and kiss a bit longer. That's what birthdays are all about, after all!

So in honor of my birthday celebration, you should go do something wonderful for yourself. Schedule that mani/pedi, treat yourself to lunch, but those heels you keep drooling over. Just do something. Play a little. Love a little. Laugha little. Love a little.

I just finished an amazing book. If you've been reading long enough you'll know nothing delights me more than living. Living life to the fullest. Exploring. Seeing new things. Visiting faraway lands and cultures. Sartorial delights. Epicurean treats. I want to experience it all. The Little Book of Meaning is a reminder to savour the now. The delight in the gradual details of this incredible experience called life.
