Pencil Me In
I could never understand the girls who grumbled and griped about Valentine's Day. As they day approached they grew more bitter. Truth is, these were pessimestic people to begin with... and the impending day of romance was just one more excuse to draw attention to their distaste for life in general.
The thing is, romance is a lot like joy and happiness. It's your responsibility - not that of someone else to manifest this in your life. It's something you experience, not something someone does for you. Frankly, some of my best Valentine's Day were those I enjoyed as a single girl. It's a day when you can add a bit more lip gloss, higher heels, have a bit more of a spring in your step, wear pink without irony and - yes, even buy yourself a massive bouquet of your favorite Stargazer lilies.
Being happy and embracing your femininity is your responsibility. Waiting on some white knight to "rescue" you is putting undue responsibility on someone else. Joy and satisfaction comes from within. And how could you be anything less than happy in a deliciously pink pencil skirt?.
So I say, single or not, treat yourself to something fun this holiday. Maybe it's a tube of gorgeous gloss. A pedicure. Maybe it's a handbag you've been coveting. Maybe it's dinner and drinks with the girls... maybe it's just some time out for yoga. Whatever it is, realize that the onus is on you to manifest your own happiness today and every day in life. Not that of Mr. Right.
Frankly, nothing is more appealing to a man than a confident, happy, self-satisfied woman. So be that woman. And in festive pink with a broad smile on your glowing face, you'll be hard to miss and impossible to resist.

Capsule Collection
Celebrity designer Christian Louboutin's highly anticipated capsule collection is now available. Twenty shoes to celebrate twenty years of craftsmanship and artistry. And - it bears mentioning - six celebratory bags.
I am absolutely swooning over the illustrations - far more than the anniversary collection shoes themselves. There's no denying he is a force of nature too powerful to be stopped. Here's a man who knows how to absolutely seduce an audience. Not only would I gladly take a closet filled with his shoes, I'd love a few walls adorned with his illustrations as well. The question is... which is more closely regarded as art? The conceptual sketch or the real thing? You be the judge.
Steal a peek at more of this great artistry on Marie Claire.

Waist Now. Want Not.
If you've been lax on your Reformer classes or skipping those Bar Method sessions... let me warn you that spring is nearly upon us and you'll have nowhere to hide once that calendar hits March. Have you seen the fresh looks I'm seeing? Curve hugging goodness, girls! Platform shoes, to-die-for dresses (in that yummy knee-length) and most importantly: waistlines! This season's looks showcase your best assets and believe me you'll want to be toned and fabulous to rock these looks.
It;s not about being skinny... in fact, I think these looks are all about celebrating a woman's curves. In at the waist and va-va-voom at the hips. Play up your best features and you'll be good to go.
Because I adore them, Isabella Oliver is my (not so) secret source for items that won't be seen all over town. The secret of course is their jersey and their commitment to showcasing rather than hiding the body. Spring 2012 does NOT disappoint. And more importantly... COLOR is here! Pink, blue, orange... I love it. Of course I've only shown you a sliver of the collection, but these were four looks I absolutely must have. Visit their site for the full array of goodies (including those incredible leopard accessories shown in the bottom right look). And seriously... hit those classes. Confidence is the most appealing thing a woman can wear!

The Big Two-Oh
Hard to comprehend that Christian Louboutin has been crafting his masterful creations for two decades. I say this largely because his brand has only been a household name for the better part of this decade. And yet, his creative genius has been focused on fine tuning the craftsmanship of shoes for twenty years. What an anniversary!
If the thought of $1000+ footwear makes you and your financial planner woozy, might I suggest the book that celebrates their design? It's the savvy girl's ticket to fabulously hot footwear while still keeping her Benjamins cool.
If, on the other hand, money is no object... I adore these croc-sequined peep-toe pumps that beguile me with their shmmery luster. By the way, I wear a size 6. ;)
For up to the moment Louboutin news, be sure to follow them on twitter. Always many in-store appearances and festive events happening around the globe.

Wanderlusting: Saint James Paris
If a picture is worth 1000 words, this post has already exceeded your attention span. Perhaps knowing that this gem of a boutique hotel is offering a private sale on bookings will rouse you from your slumber.
With interior style served up by Paris's Bambi Sloan, this hôtel particulier surrounded by a privacy wall and garden will astound even the most well-heeled traveler. It manages to be both quirky and utterly posh at the same time (which is a good thing, as I'm not so keen on quirk but an undying slave to posh).
But back to that private garden. Though enjoyable by day, it is a sight best taken in at night. Imagine fine dining under the stars in Paris's 16th arrondissment. Your surroundings (and company) decidedly genteel. You'll feel transported to the countryside yet all the while be surrounded by some of the city's most prestigious real estate.
Book quickly, however. This 48 room château can be depended upon to draw a crowd. You'll want to ensure there's room for you at the inn, lest ye be locked outside the private walls of this remarkable property. Digging Deeper: Isabella Oliver Winter Sale
I could shop the Isabella Oliver Sale racks forever. Seriously, I don't know what those ladies are up to, but their designs are absolutely impeccable. This lovely outfit above? Culled from their clearance section. That's right... the perfect leather jacket, ideal straight-leg jeans and a chunky necklace that'll make you swoon. Pair that with an of-the-moment (yet timeless) striped tee and a luxe leather bag and you're off with style to spare. I could go anywhere in this outfit with the right shoes. In this case, sky high black heels should do the trick.
(Full disclosure... I have this top and I wear it as often as I can... I adore it!)
One reason you shouldn't browse the sale racks for too long? I assure you your size is at sell-out risk. Take it from a girl who frequents this online store. If you see it, snag it immediately lest it be added to the "one that got away" file in your emotional memory.
Shop now or forever hold your peace.

Louboutin Looms Large over LA
You lucky Angelenos have all the fun. An 80 degree New Year's Day. Balmy, breezy climate. All the celeb watching one can tolerate. And of course, the huge mural of a Louboutin stiletto on Sunset.
I love that this massive (10 stories tall?) image of a stunning heel was created in collaboration with street artist Galo Make Canote on the side of an otherwise unsightly building. You LA dwellers certainly know how to welcome a fellow to town. That's right, the massive billboard was created to properly greet Mr. Louboutin to Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills on February 3. And, of course, to drum up press mentions just like this one. I'd say it's working.
Those of you who are going to the event, be sure to give Chris a big squeeze from me, okay?

Change of A Dress
While you may easily overlook the power potential of a tan dress, I say it is one of those closet essentials that is truly underestimated. You can easily go from meet-the-parents sweet to drop dead diva with just a few quick accessory changes. And if we're confessing here, I must admit to having a closet full of festive prints that can barely be worn more than once. That's the secret power of a solid dress: it out performs any print, since you can transform the way you wear it each and every time.
This lovely sample above? The perfectly polished Sunset Boulevard dress from Shabby Apple. This, dear style lovers, is what happens when khaki meets curves. The fabric has a hint of sheen, a bit of stretch, and is nipped and tucked in all the right places. If you're looking for a versatile piece that will go from day to night and back to day again, this is the number.
My favorite way to wear a piece like this? With sizzle. Lots of it. A bold cuff, towering tall heels and (just to mix it up a bit) a lady-like scarf tied about the neck. Add big sunglasses (is there any other kind?) and voila! You are ready for anything that this fabulous life might throw your way.
So... who, you may be asking is Shabby Apple? They are a "no boys allowed" brand. What do I mean by that? It's all about the dress and the skirt. There are no pants to be found anywhere on their site. Dressing in skirts and dresses is the epitome of femininity if you ask me. There's no mistaking that you see yourself as a woman when you walk into a room in heels and a dress. And certainly not a dress like this. Va-va-voom, baby!

Words With Friends... The Old School Edition
It's fascinating to me that in a texting, BBM'ing world we also relish and celebrate the beauty of stationery. I do think it's possible, though, that we love the artistry, nostalgia and idea of beautiful papergoods and handwritten notes more than we relish the actual use of them. We love to fawn over letterpress on Etsy and the newest designer collabs at establish stationers... but the number of handwritten notes I receive (and send, frankly) clearly absolutely decreased. In the meantime, my inbox runneth over.
Does that stop me (or any of us) from coverting limited edition creations like Oscar de la Renta's new Mrs. John L Strong produced line of stationery? Not a chance. Will it dampen my desire for Vreeland's (that being Alexander Vreeland... grandson to undisputed fashion icon Diana Vreeland) Special Edition Card Set available exclusively at Barney's. Never.
Just two days ago, in fact, I placed my order for custom Crane's note cards and personalized envelopes. I do this each year, always with a slight twist on my normal design. It's an expression of self and always a personal journey to create something that reflects my mood or current style. Somehow the pretty box with custom papers bearing my name actually prompts me to write little notes. It's the letter writing equivalent of having a TotalGym in your bedroom. You invested in it, and to not use it is a waste of time and money.
And now, with even more glamorous sets like Oscar's on the scene I may find myself placing an additional order. The de la Renta paper goods assortment features glamorous sets of individually hand-pressed pieces printed on luxury weight creamy paper. Choose from note cards, invitations, and place cards - each featuring beautifully embossed gilded bows and the designer's emblem on the inside of the envelopes. How positively irresistible is that? For the ladylike among us, these glamorous little notes are the perfect way of inviting friends for a fete or simply saying thank you.
(Editor's tip: since these aren't personalized, they make an ideal last minute holiday gift for that stylish friend, sister or loved one.)
Shop for yours at Oscar de la Renta.

Venti Girl Holiday Gift Guide: The Posh Princess
As a general rule I frown upon gifts that tell a recipient how to dress or how to decorate their homes. The idea of giving clothing to an adult or offering someone some form of home decor seems very imposing and assuming.
There are a few exceptions, however. If you're giving the gift to a love interest or very, very good friend whose taste (or burning desire) you absolutely know, then by all means forge ahead. In this case, the Vanessa Knox one-shoulder, curve hugging knit top is one such item that your favorite fashionable female would be hard pressed to refuse.
Designed with Grecian styling in a buttery soft jersey rib, this flattering silhouette creates a sexy look for night out glamour. I love it best in violet or mouse, but charcoal offers far more versatility. For added drama she might pair this with an arm full of bangles, tousled hair and skinny black pants. As gift-giver you might consider some dramatic earrings to top off the look. Caution: she (and you) should brace yourselves for compliments from this fabulous wardrobe addition. It's attention you both are likely to enjoy all season long.

Mundane to Marvelous
When I think of successful people in whose footsteps I'd love to follow, those with lifestyle brands are always front of mind. I previously lumped Trina Turk in with successful forces in the fashion industry. Even her line of outdoor fabrics counted as fashion to me, as it seemed a natural extension of her wildly successful prints normally seen on dresses and other items from her apparel line.
But look at her now. Firmly standing with one foot deeply rooted in fashion (including preppy menswear) and the other reaching deeper and deeper into interiors. No longer limited to just pillows, Trina's colorful world now contains candles, stationery, bedding and other household items. What kind, you ask? It might surprise you to discover that she offers such common items such as the dustpan. Leave it to this master of print and pattern to enliven humble household items and elevate them to superstar status. Scissors? Measuring tape? A toolbox? You bet. And they're pretty good looking to boot.
So what about you? What master of their field or mogul do you wish to emulate? Who in your view has blazed a professional trail worthy of admiration?
For me it's those with a brand beneath them. Actual objects with their brand name boldly emblazoned on them. Kelly Wearstler. Trina. Suzanne Kasler. DVF. These are the first names that come to mind, as well as the always on top Barbara Barry. It's about taking the design within and seeing it on shelves and on pretty tables. It's about the realization of a lifelong dream.
And you?

Topping the Table in Style
For some inexplicable reason I was all worked up over my place settings for Thanksgiving. Now don't get me wrong, I know I'm very focused on pretty things... but my sudden obsession with bone china versus French porcelain was annoying... even to me. In the end I found what I felt was a good bone china set for every day. Plain, classic, soft white dishes in classic sizes.
The reason? I want to mix in super gorgeous accent plates from better brands and feel liberated enough to add in glam coffee cups and chargers as the mood strikes me. Any excuse to add some glitz to the table is okay by me, right? While I'm very classic in most areas of design, the table is one area where I love to go a bit overboard. Key plates should be white, but I'm all for having a bit of excess and exotic when it comes to accent pieces. The wilder the better.
Why am I bringing this up? I just received a note from L'Objet letting me know they are having a sweet sweepstakes. They are giving away a $500 shopping spree of their glam tableware. I say jump on this bus before it passes, as pretty place settings tend to come hand in hand with costing a pretty penny. Well, many pennies.
Take a tour of their site and peek at their upcoming Fortuny collection. Stunning. Opulent? Yes.. but isn't that what makes life and dinner parties interesting?

Best of Black Friday
Don't sweat it Just get it. This is my shopping motto today and always. Having worked retail early in life, I don't go near a mall the day after Christmas. Isn't that what online shopping is all about, anyway? I can shop in my jammies propped up against my headboard while others brave the cold and the crowds.
For those of you like me, here's a roundup of some of the more notable online style deals to be had. Enjoy!Posted at 07:29 AM in events, fashion, great gifts, shopping, style | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack (0)

Gaultier in Dallas
By now fashionable readers across the globe have all read that haute couture designer Jean Paul Gaultier has opened his Fashion as Art exhibit here in Dallas. Last week's kickoff events featured fabulous private fetes to honor him and exclusive previews of the multimedia display. Jean Paul himself was on hand much to the delight of party goers and the city's most well-heeled.
Those who venture to the Dallas Museum of Art will be wowed by more than 130 of Gaultier’s avant-garde ensembles spanning over 35 years from the designer’s couture and ready-to-wear collections. The remarkable exhibit will showcase these one-of-a-kind masterpieces along with their accessories (I love that extra touch, giving you context) and numerous archival documents (think: conceptual sketches).
Gaultier is known for his over-the-top creations and his provocative point of view. His work has included some of fashion's most recognizable garments like the pointed bustiers of legendary Madonna fame. He is also known for consistently delighting fans and style observers with his boundary crossing fashion confections and fantasy-laden runway experiences. Regardless of your interest in fashion, you must admire him as an artist and risk taker. He fully embodies both.
Like the city of Dallas itself (a city well known for it's commitment to fashion), this is no ordinary exhibit. It is Jean Paul Gaultier, after all. Expect to see truly marvelous works of fashion (represented as art) alongside video clips and musical recordings from shows, concerts, and films - all incorporating his designs. The interactive museum experience features 30 animated mannequins that offer viewers songs and commentary. If you're expecting a quiet moment at a stuffy gallery, this won't be for you.
Dallas is the first of only two U.S. cities on this highly anticipated international tour. I am proud to know that our local fashionably fierce citizens will not let this fact go unnoticed or this event fade away quickly. Tickets are on sale now at dallasmuseumofart.org.

Christian Lacroix... Costume Designer
Couturier Christian Lacroix recently stepped away from the world of runway design to focus on a very different style of fashion: costumes. His current focus is designing for Paris’ Opéra Garnier, but the next few years see him globetrotting and digging into new and varied avenues of design.
While every outfit is to some degree a costume for life, there is a wide gulf between delicate haute couture gowns and performance apparel for a rigorous activity such as dance. Style.com has an interview with the legendary figure and highlights the similarities and differences between the two categories of apparel:
Never one to sit still, the next few years we will see creations from Lacroix for Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme in Paris, a staging of Madame Butterfly in Hamburg, a hotel in Bangkok with Sofitel and even finishing lines 3 and 4 of the Tramway in Montpellier, which will be operational next April. He may have stepped off the runway, but certainly not the treadmill of highly publicized design. It just proves that unstoppable forces of design are just that: unstoppable, regardless of the particular area in which they operate.A costume is made to be seen from afar; it has to “speak,” to convey a character from the moment the performer steps onto the stage. An haute couture piece is particularly beautiful when it’s right under your nose.
The distance between the stage and the audience is also magnified by light and the illusion of spectacle. You can improvise by using humble materials, which you can then patina, trim, and paint, forcing your point so that from a distance they appear sumptuous. In couture, you cannot use anything but the highest quality fabrics, embroideries, and other elements.
But the process is the same—for me in any case. I considered my couture clients heroines of their own lives, and I tried to create second skins for them that were in harmony with their bodies, their character, their lifestyle—exactly as for an actor, a prima ballerina, or an opera star. My fashions were theatrical, operatic, spectacular, and very akin to stage life. Trends of the moment are of scant importance to stage creations.
Aren't these sketches for the Paris ballet dreamy?

Drexel Heritage: High Point Market Showroom Tour
As you may recall, my great friend Elaine Williamson stood in for me on the High Point Market blogger tour. She and some of my favorite online (and offline) friends were shown around in style by brand representatives and the High Point Market Authority themselves. An insider's look at new collections, the customization process and emerging market trends.
Her biggest surprise was her own response to Drexel Heritage. Elaine wasn't as familiar with the brand and was impressed by the depth of their customization options, the frames available throughout the collections and the very high end appeal of this brand.
{Full disclosure: my company does some professional work with Drexel's parent company Furniture Brands, as well as a few of this company's sister brands... but that doesn't alter the fact that I am a genuine fan of Drexel's seriously hot pieces.}
The frames, the fabric selection, the wide array of custom finishes, the designer trim... this is no ordinary brand. Drexel offers tradition with a massive dose of glamour thrown in just for the sheer fun of it.
Throw in glamorous pieces like this Cloe Lamp Table (which I desperately need in my living room right now) and I'm a fan for life. One of the creative geniuses behind the success of this brand is Denise Alala. If you've not been in the showroom to meet this gorgeous force of nature, you're missing out. It's clear she has design genius in her veins. A few Markets back I had the pleasure of walking solo with her through the showroom and was so impressed not only with her style outlook, but her ability to render that vision flawlessly into the finished product.
Much like Pearson's Jennifer McConnell, Denise has seems to have a peephole into the future of design. She's a step or two ahead of the rest of the crowd, and if you're not following her cues you're going to miss out and wonder what just happened without you.
For a tiny sample of this force at work, tune into the Drexel blog to see what she and Carl drum up next.

A Woman's Right to Shoes
The Daily Mail article may not be particularly favorable, but you must appreciate Tamara Ecclestone's incredible inventory of shoes in her massive walk-in closet. The writer clearly doesn't support a woman's right to shoes... and many pretty pairs as she wishes. And when you're heiress to a fortune as this this lucky girl is, you have the means to do with your trust fund as you wish. Carry on, Tamara. But do as your mother suggests, donate to worthy causes and those in need.

From Cover to Cover
When I gaze at my office book shelves I see that they are lined with terrific books. Not surprisingly, most of the titles are published by none other than Rizzoli. Again and again they produce masterful written works that caprivate the fashion and design savvy audience. Just when I think I have enough, I see a lengthy list of new releases that have me salivating.
Case in point... yesterday marked the release of the highly anticipated Christian Louboutin book. Swoon! Cannot wait to possess this incredible work. I love that Christian himself was disappointed the tome couldn't contain ALL of his glorious creations. I sense volume two won't be far behind. Be sure to get your manicured hands on what is sure to be a collector's piece.
Next up, Louis Vuitton: Architecture and Interiors. Could this get any better? My love of fashion, luxe craftsmanship and my interior design combined in one hardbound cover. Any of you who delight in the fanciful design of retail spaces and a brand's impact on architecture will surely covet this book. If you've traveled abroad (especially to Japan) you'll see just how dramatically Louis Vuitton has transformed the retail experience both inside and out.
And finally, the grande dame herself... Carine Roitfield. If ever a woman caused ripples in fashion and business, it's Carine. Considered a visionary and muse to many fashion giants, this controversial Vogue editrix opens up and shares French Vogue editorial tearsheets, behind-the-scenes look at campaign shoots and even an offers us an inside view into her creative thought process and sensibility. Carine Roitfield: Irreverent is a book I, a student of fashion and the imposing figures who shape the landscape of the business, must read.

One in Every Color
I try very hard to resist the temptation to purchase multiple colors of the same item. Occasionally, however, a piece is so timeless, so perfect, so impossibly "Franki" that I realize I'd be a fool to pass up the opportunity to invest in as many as I can get my pretty hands upon. Well... I've found something...
The "Fay Two Way Top" from Vanessa Knox absolutely floors me. If it the epitome of sleek styling and relaxed comfort rolled into one. Toss it over jeans and wear it draped around your neck in a gentle cowl. Or for dressier occasions wear it off the shoulder with a sweeping floor-length skirt for an unapologetic sexy look. Imagine it with a long, fabulous necklace or with hair swept up and chandelier earrings? This beauty is begging to go out on the town.
Versatility never looked so glamorous. Normally, even if I find such a magical item, the colors are all just a bit "off" leaving me wanting. Not in this case. Vanessa has masterfully chosen three colors I can't possibly choose between. A mysterious shade called "mouse" that offers irresistible softness, a shade of violet that would look great on any complexion and an impossibly pretty charcoal that will be reached for every time I open my closet.
Know what else I love? Aside from the incredible ruching (oh my!), it has those sleeves that are a touch too long. I absolutely love that detail. And the fabric is a supremely soft blend of wool and modal blend jersey ensuring comfort and impeccable fit. This just has yummy perfection written all over it. *sigh*
I'm in love with this piece. I'm also shamelessly admitting I'll be investing in one of each for my closet. Thank you, Vanessa, for reading my mind and answering my fashion prayer.
See the rest of her incredible collection at VanessaKnox.com.

Booking It: Michael S. Smith
It's hard to understate the professional impact of being the DC darling when it comes to interior design. Michael S. Smith, selected to be the interior design guru of choice when they outfitted the White House to suit their needs is just such a person. In this glossy new book he reveals his expertise and experience on high traffic areas of the home: kitchens and baths.
Yes, his clients often boast far larger budgets than the normal homeowner, but there are always universal truths in design. These two room in particular offer designers unusual challenges. They must be glamorous and impossibly clean looking... yet all necessary items must be readily within reach. This game of professional hide and seek would be problematic in the hands of an amateur, but Smith generously offers you his hard earned wisdom.
While this could have easily been just a book of glossy photos, Michael S. Smith: Kitchens and Baths is actually a well-composed and comprehensive resource book. Smith offers serious input on cabinetry choices, practical materials, reliable trade (and public) resources as well as other insider tips. I LOVE when designers do this. Yes, I love a book of pretty photos... but when they lay down the design law in short order the book becomes a very valuable resource.
While the rooms might be polar opposites (kitchens are often the center jewel of the home, and baths hidden luxuries) he offers interesting parallels on their relationship to us and the home. Each space requires strict order and design to serve their users well. Knowing this will help you approach each space with a fresh perspective - even if you just decide to reorganize a few cabinets.
Whether a curious homewoener or a professional in the design trade, this beautiful book is a surprisingly great read. Grab your copy here and learn more about Michael's work on his portfolio site.

So... What is New and What Is Next?
For those of you who weren't at the NYDC event a few weeks back, we wanted to follow up with Pearson's impossibly chic creative director Jennifer McConnell and ask the question on everyone's mind: What is new and what is next?
For a quick background, you have to realize that Jennifer's role with Pearson requires her to travel extensively in search of new techniques, new textiles, new ideas, etc. She is always, always a few steps ahead of trend and has an amazing eye for style. While global travel keeps her informed and curious, it's clear she possesses an innate flair for design. If Jennifer says it's en vogue, you can take that to the bank.
Best of all, she's bubbly, energetic and one of the most fun people I've had the pleasure to work with. Pearson has a true dynamo on their hands with her!
She took time to follow up and answer my questions about What's New, What's Next and shared more about the event. Read on to see what she has to say about the home fashion forecast and the talented company she enjoyed that evening.
Jennifer, we must know... what is new in interiors and furnishings that was evident at WNWN?
"We are definitely seeing a return to the 70’s. Whether it is 70’s glam or 70’s boho chic its taking front and center just like it is in fashion. Sparkly gold mixed with mirror feels like studio 54 disco glamour. Ikats and batiks feel much more earth mother sensible."
Were there signs of what we can expect next? Emerging trends?
"More color! Everyone is finally tired of the greys and ivories. Touches of gold everywhere from furniture to bathroom fixtures, and color is taking front and center – not just “pops” anymore."
You walked the Hickory Chair + Pearson showroom with Michelle from Lonny and the talented duo that is Tilton Fenwick... what elements stood out to them the most?
"I brought from High Point a quick sneak preview of some of our more exciting exclusive textiles for Fall 2011. Lots of color mixed with hand crafted looks; ikats, tie dyes, batiks. Oranges, fuchsias, raspberries and indigos. They generated some of the most excitement for the event – definitely the most photographs taken. Michelle loved one tie dye stripe so much she took it with her for hopefully the upcoming issue of Lonny! Keep your eyes peeled for it!"
"They also loved the number of mirrored pieces mixed with the menswear looks. Michelle commented that they keep the herringbone and wool upholstery from feeling too masculine."
"And they both adore the 9651 shagreen bunching table!"
The event was a huge success by all accounts. We heard you were selling pieces directly off the floor to keep up with demand! Which item was the runaway hit for the evening? Or were there several?
"Everyone loved the small occasional pieces! They are so perfect for NYC living when space is limited so pieces have to wear multiple hats. In particular I saw one 9645 silver leafed table and one 9651 shagreen bunching table be carried out by very happy shoppers!"
How did the crowd respond to your newest additions, like the new chaise sectional or the swanky new sofa?
"The chaise sectional combination is just perfect for NYC living. A number of people commented on how decadent it is to own a sectional in NYC because it takes up so much space. However, they loved this version because both pieces are very small scale, and both can ride up in a passenger elevator (no freight elevator needed!) For such a small footprint, it seats quite a few, and of course looks stylish while doing it!"
Anything you spotted in another showroom or heard from the attendees that was unexpected or downright fabulous?
"There were so many amazing events going on – Sub Zero had celebrity chefs cooking gourmet meals in their showroom. Neirmann Weeks had a silver leafing demonstration happening – if you ever get the chance to see a demo like that make the time! It is an amazing dying craft! Laura Kirar was supporting her gorgeous new collection for Arteriors. There was so much going on, that it was too much to see in one night!"
Thank you so much for sharing, Jennifer. Looking forward to the next soiree and more importantly, excited to get a preview of those new colorful textiles coming at us this season. Color is back!

There's always party somewhere at High Point Market. This year the fete to attend is the star studded Rizzoli book signing. Sunday from 4 - 5:30 PM in the Courtyard at Market Square you will be elbow to elbow with some of the brightest stars and biggest names in the business.
The Trendsetter Book Event will offer for sale the fresh titles from top designers, who will also be on hand to sign the books. Are you ready for this list? Martyn Lawrence Bullard, signing his tome Live Love & Decorate. The impossibly glamorous Mary McDonald penning your name in her book The Allure of Style. Suzanne Kasler (a dear personal and professional favorite of mine) with her fabulous book Inspired Interiors. Designer Bobby McAlpine signing his book The Home Within Us: Romantic Houses, Evocative Rooms. Star Michael Connors with his volume Caribbean Houses, The Splendor of Cuba, and British West Indies Style. And last but not least, Florence de Dampierre with the terrific title Walls: The Best of Decorative Treatments, and French Chic.
Put away your corporate AMEX, the event is free and open to all who attend High Point Market. Insider tip: the fab designers will only be on hand for an hour to sign books, so be sure to get there early.
Bring a tote to lug away all of those terrific hardback books. These are more than just pretty coffee table books to decorate a space, they are incredible published works you'll want to devour when you have a free moment. They are indeed seriously delicious.
For more scheduled events, be sure to visit the High Point Market Authority's comprehensive site.

Let's Take It Outside
The irony of living in a sunny, beautiful Texas is that everyone hides indoors during the summer. No matter how you slice it, when it's 114 outside it is simply too hot to frolic in the sunshine. But the moment the thermometer hits 95, the parks are packed, lakes are brimming with activity and patios are overflowing with giddy Texans enjoying the sun.
One of the things I love most about Dallas is the popularity of fantastic patio dining at most restaurants. Yesterday we al fresco for every meal. Restaurant patios were abuzz with happy people, laughing couples and animated conversation. Us among them.
It's as if the city has come to life after a blistering summer. And it has. Fortunately we were able to score our favorite tables amidst the crowds, but it's clear we're not the only ones taking things outside this season. It's time to create our own Shangri-La at home.
Clear blue skies, gentle breezes and 70-80 degree temps that will last for months... I don't want to miss a moment of this incredible weather. And so the hunt began for my perfect outdoor dining set. And... score! I have found it.
This photo does not do it justice. The Andalusia collection from Century Furniture is designed by Richard Frinier. Again and again when I see what I choose for myself I'm reminded of how incredibly classic my tastes are. The Andalusia Collection's archutectural form and bronze finish are just beautiful to me. I love every detail and can't wait to see it in person today. Wish us luck as we go take it for a test drive (or should I say sit?)
Enjoy fall, everyone. I hope you're enjoying the shift in the seasons as much as we are. It's my favorite time of year!

Coat of Arms
I do love a great coat. Preferably white or black (cream, actually). Always a wool-cashmere blend. I like them fitted at the waist. I love a good collar (the more dramatic, the better). Buttons are a passion of mine on coats. They should be beautiful, otherwise completely disappear into the design. I prefer bracelet sleeves rather than full length.
I'm very picky about overall garment length, as I'm petite. If it's a shorter coat it should come to the bottom of the hips or be so cropped as to stop above the waist. If it is long, it should hit above knee length, as to much longer can quickly look dowdy.
In the end it's al about fit. It must fit you like a glove or you must have it altered. If you try it on at the shop and the shoulders don't fit, say goodbye. It's just not meant to be. Sleeves can be altered, but sloppy shoulders are just a sad thing to see.
That said, Trina Turk has several gorgeous options in her fall lineup. Her capes are to die for. Part cape, part coat, these versatile wonders are strikingly beautiful. But that mod cream one with the oversized buttons? Oh yes. I'll need that. I like it best with the collar buttoned all the way or not at all. This one looks best that way.

Lady Luxe
I'm a sucker for girly details and French-inspired glamour. Thankfully, fall is ushering in a wave of style options to satisfy my closet cravings. Obviously Rachel Zoe is delivering her polished chic with a hint of Paris infused in every well-designed piece. The Audrey bag is one of my favorite pieces from her new collection. But look at Milly. My "go-to" preppy brand is offering a Chanel-inspired Marzia sweater jacket that makes me positively giddy.
Both of these options work just as well with jeans as they do a pencil skirt. Add heels, a fitted tank and a ballerina bun (or bouncy curls), top with a seasonal lip color, a spritz of fragrance and you're out the door. And isn't that what Parisian-chic is all about? The ultimate fashion luxury is effortless glamour and radiant confidence. Sip your espresso with an extra dose of both this fall.

The Wonderful World of Wearstler
Now that we K-Dub fans have caught our collective breath I can showcase some of my favorite pieces from her brand new site. Yes, Kelly Wearstler, polarizing design celebrity, is now selling her goods directly to consumers through her own site. I have to say... go Kelly! I love that she's doing this. More importantly, she is offering accessories and an impressive little collection of RTW as well. Most silhouettes are easy, breezy, flowy shapes. Great if you have Wearstler's stilt-like legs. For petite princesses like myself, this fitted black mini Chevron Dress is the key to sophistication. Add a conversation starting bracelet and snag a piece of jewelry for your home and - viola! - you've entered the wonderful world of Wearstler. Let it be known that I approve.

Boutique of the Week: Plum Pretty Sugar
Of all the worldly advancements, often the best life improvements are the most basic. A new category of apparel has appeared on the market. Loungerie. It straddles the line between lingerie and loungewear and couldn't be more perfect for today's modern girl. Pretty patterns, breathable fabrics, delicate silhouettes that offer coverage and comfort.
One of the masters of this craft is Plum Pretty Sugar. Like the pretty florals themselves, the brand is based in sunny California. To me, this is evident in the lightness and airiness of the designs. Whisper-weight cottons and easy silhouettes. It's exactly what any girl wants to wear when she's at home relaxing but still wants to feel pretty and feminine.
I've been following Nina on twitter for ages. She has a fabulous blog and an eye for beautiful things. Those inspirations are easy to find in her collections. There's a category for brides and bridesmaids (genius, as you need something pretty to wear while getting ready for the big event), a line of linens for the home (wise use of those impossibly soft fabrics) and a beautiful selection of headbands. It's all just so well thought out.
So when you find yourself unwinding this weekend, consider your choice of outfit. Are you maximizing the opportunity to feel pretty and beautiful while still enjoying the comforts of home? Why not slip into something a little more fabulous. I assure you... you're worth it.

Venti Cup's Joss & Main Curator's Collection Starts Today!
Today is the day! This morning my Joss & Main Curator's Collection will go live. The theme is Livable Glamour.
To me, true luxury is surrounding yourself with a home that is as luxurious as it is inviting. The key to achieving this lifestyle? Careful selection of those things you add to your home. Taking a bit more time to inspect upholstery, invest in quality furnishings, add accessories that have significance to you. It is a curated look. Think: hand-tufted wool rugs, unexpected objets d′art, comfortable seating in plush fabrics, soothing color palettes. I love mixing textures and periods. Decorating in this way creates warmth and interest in every room of your home. It is as sophisticated as it is welcoming, and that is true luxury.
As in so many areas, I've taken a cue from our European counterparts. Livable Glamour is not a "fresh off the showroom floor" look. Each item in your home (and your closet for that matter) should be something you absolutely love. Focus on touchable textures, interesting details and quality pieces that are stylish but not trendy... all of these combine to create an air of effortlessly chic style. This is how you build a great wardrobe AND style a fabulous home.
Today's Joss & Main Curator's Collection will showcase some of my favorite pieces sourced from the incredible Joss & Main catalog. Each item has been personally selected by me and chosen for it's ability to exude effortless elegance. Choose one, choose many... but remember to passionately pursue those pieces you love! Effortless glamour comes from loving your surroundings and expressing your personal style through your choices.
Happy shopping, everyone! Après vous!

A Pinch of Salt
I have several shopping addictions. Well, better phrased: I have key items I love to purchase again and again in myriad variations. One of those items is the cream, wool winter coat. Impractical? Maybe. Stunning? You bet.
This sea salt version from J. Crew is begging me to order her. I love the Napoleonic touch of the brass buttons and double-breasted front with belted waist. Feminine and regal. This one is impeccably fitted and hits at mid-thigh, making it sensible for maneuvering in and out of the car. My guess is that this beauty is supple and smooth. The wool comes exclusively from Italy's Manifattura di Carmignano mill, known for it's luxuriously soft woolen fabrics.
It even comes in... petite, meaning it will actually fit me. I may not have success with jeans or pants at J. Crew... but I know I can order a petite jacket or dress from them and it will fit just right every single time. Their jackets and coats have impeccable fit are always look as though I've had them custom crafted by my own Savile Row tailor. Remember - especially for petites - fit is everything.
Also worth noting: this comes in Royal Purple, Flame Red and a gorgeous saffron shade...Posted at 05:07 PM in fashion, shopping, style | Permalink | Comments (4) | TrackBack (0)

Objêt D'Art: La Tour Eiffel
Holy Parisian hotness. An 8' model of the Eiffel Tower. Yes. Yes, I'll have some of that, please.
Described as:
Side note: I love that the catalog-writing team at Restoration Hardware needed to add "Decorative use only; not a toy and not for climbing" to the bullet points. Get your tall taste of Paris here. But please, no climbing."...architectural model is comprised of hand-cut pieces that take one artisan nearly 2 months to complete. Crafted of American oak, it is rendered in meticulous detail, from the arched base to the latticework sides and delicate spire."

Who's The Boss?
The biggest sin I see repeatedly in home design is fear. Fear of being yourself. While I agree that you should dress and style your home for the life you WANT to live... it is important in both instances to design (or dress) fearlessly with things that YOU love.
Most commonly it is a desire to design so that the husband feels "at home" as much as the wife. But let me tell you something... most of them don't care. They just want the decisions made and the wife to be happy. You know the old saying, "happy wife, happy life"...? It's so true. If she (knowingly or unknowingly) designs the home to suit his tastes she may not "go for it" the way she would have if she lived alone. In the end, he'll hear how this isn't quite right or she doesn't really like that. It prolongs the process and makes the husband less open to her future urges to redesign a space. Design without fear and you'll design the space you want to live in for years to come. Both partners will be happy. It's true.
The other side of this is seeing homeowners designing for real or imaginary friends. What will "they" think? It doesn't matter. At all. You live in your home. Friends and family visit on occasion. A woman (or man, for that matter) should never, ever be plagued by insecurities about what others think. It will steal your daily joy of living.
Your home is just that: your intimate, private dwelling. It should be the space you long to be, the environment in which you feel at most (you guessed it...) at home.
Do yourself a favor: dress, live and decorate without fear. Be bold, courageous and full of confidence about your style decisions - both large and small. They matter.
Live the life YOU want to live. Style yourself and your surroundings the way that YOU wish to style them. In doing so you'll discover a richer more satisfying experience every single day. The bonus? I assure you, you'll discover you have opinions you nevr honored and style you had not allowed yourself to discover. Trust thy self.

Show Me Your Dallas
I've really got to get better about tooting my own horn. So here we go. Toot too, beep beep as they say in disco songs!
Remember the Show Me Your Dallas feature I began a few months back? The point was to connect with these amazing girls I'd met online before moving to Dallas last winter. Each of them were given the opportunity to show me "their" version of this incredible city and play the role of stylish tour guide. Let me tell you, these girls did NOT disappoint!
It became such an affair that the Dallas Morning News got word of my adventures in coolfinding. A few calls, a few emails, an interview and photoshoot later... voila. Front (and back!) page of the Life & Style section on the 4th of July weekend issue of the paper. Full color. How's that for a welcome to town? Since the online article is only available to subscribers, you'll need to download the PDF here.
Why did I do it? There's nothing like exploring a city through the eyes of local experts and fellow design-minded girls. And trust me, the ones I chose were amazing at highlighting amazing hidden resources and fabulous boutiques.
Who was this chic posse? Interior designer extraordinaire Emily Johnston, award-winning designer Elaine Williamson, IBB showroom co-owner and designer Shay Geyer, talented designer Kyle Knight, graphic designer and social media vixen Sandra Evans, local Dallas interior design celebrity Beth Dotolo were first on the schedule.
Honestly, everyone was amazing, gracious and incredibly generous with their time and attention. I couldn't have chosen a better team to go on playdates with. The best part? Loved them all and genuinely feel it was th ebest way to kickstart offline friendships. Dallas is a city of fabulius people, but these girls are all at the top of their game and it shows.
There are still more posts to come, as it takes a while to recreate the whirlwind tours of the city on the blog. But stay tuned, as I have three very talented girls left to feature: The talented and stylish Haley Schultheis of Nonsense & Senibility, product designer Erin of Global Views, and interior designer Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25. We completed our outings ages ago but I've been too caught up with client work to post them. Girls... stay tuned ;)
In the meantime, read all of the adventures here.
Last but not least, my heartfelt thanks go out to features writer Jamie Knodel from the DMN. Jamie, you found my blog, saw the feature as newsworthy and really made this a terrific experience from start to finish. I can't thank you enough, Jamie, for authoring the piece so generously and for spending so much of your company's precious colored ink on me and my girls. I am delighted to call you a new friend as well. Thank you.

Mellon Drops
Although it's against my brain wiring to want to "be" anyone else, there are certain persons for whom I might bend those rules a bit just to see how it felt to be them for a day. Take Tamara Mellon for a moment. Where to we begin? Legs for miles, a head for business, head of a famed Jimmy Choo empire, a shoe collection every girl dreams of (after all, if it's missing from her shoe wardrobe she simply designs it and - voila! - it appears in the product lineup and invariably in her closet. And then there's the matter of her NYC apartment. I can't stop gawking over it. More importantly, she's powerful, fun woman with a social calendar build to actually put those glamorous things to use.
Fortunately for me, an out of body experience isn't necessary. With a little focus I too can build a Choo Choo train of shoes to line my closet walls. And I can certainly recreate a few elements from her swanky Manhattan pad and equally swanky lifestyle.
First, there's the matter of that light fixture in her living room. Do you see it? I can't take my eyes from it. I love it. I need it. I want it. Right over my desk. Jewelry for the ceiling. It is nothing short of hot.It seems to be a George Kovacs fixture, although it is remarkably similar to this Janice Minor fixture as well. Regardless: it is mine. And that gets me one step closer to lifting some of her swanky style.
And since I'm in "King Midas" mode, loving every gold thing in sight,we might as well head on over to 1stDibs.com and see what else I can find to get me felling Mellon-y. These Maison Jansen nesting tables ought to do it. But since Tamara has a predeliction for wild things, I suspect this ram's head coffee table would be a fron runner in her shopping spree. After all, her enviable desk is made from a brass ram's head base - and it is to die for. But let's focus on the piece de resistance... her iconic white tufted leather sofa. Id you're really going for her look, it's a must. This one from 1stDibs should do nicely.
Add in a dash of apple green, sequins and towering heels and you've got the perfect Mellon Drop cocktail. Stay tuned as we stalk more celebrity homes and choose some of the key elements of style necessary to recreate those look. Ciao, bella!
Photos of Tamara's apartment procured from Accidental Chic, Velvet Moss and Harpers Bazaar.
