Pet Beds for Fashion Forward Fido

Frankly, I haven't seen many advancements in the pet bed industry. I've seen better looking pillows and more plush fabrics used for those "domes" we all see... but nothing previously on the market was upscale enough to place next to your high end home furnishings.

I'm happy to say that I now stand corrected. On my desk is a lovely book of sample photography and information on designer Katherine Elizabeth's Pet Design Furniture. She calls it furniture because, quite frankly, it is furniture for your home that happens to accommodate dear Fido. This is no simple plump pillow with a bolster surround that you place on the floor of your laundry room. These are elevated, custom finished pieces made of wood strong enough to support up to 200lbs of puppy love. These oval-shaped creations are crafted of a double wall of bendable wood elevated, mounted on a solid wood base over turned wood legs. Each piece is easily handsome enough to earn a space in your stylish living room. So good looking, in fact, that it'd be a shame to hide it in a back room.

Beds can be built to your specifications. Each one goes through a minimum of a 12 hour construction and finishing process. You'll choose your wood finish, your upholstery and may even opt for additional customization. Pillows and bedding are non-toxic and organic (as we've come to expect) and the unique Kapok filler makes the bed uniquely buoyant. Why does that matter? It offers your precious pet special skeletal support and comfort for muscular conditions as well as allergies. (Kapok fiber is also particularly water and mold resistant, great for those of us obsessed with clean!)

ZaZa Zoom

We've been plotting and planning a quick trip to Houston. Since we'll likely only be there one or two nights it makes sense to indulge and have an "experience" versus just a stay at a hotel. We've been looking at the Four Seasons and other sure bets... but the creative cutie in me always seeks the thrill of the boutique experience.

As luck would have it, Houston has their own Hotel ZaZa. We have one here in Dallas too, and if the scene there is any indication the Houston outpost is likely to be a local hotspot.

What's it like? According to Jetsetter, the building in which the hotel is housed was originally built in 1926. This doesn't translate to stodgy, though. The historic hotel is decked out with avant-garde elements, sleek furnishings and an eclectic visual mix. While there are classic references to the past (think gilded mirrors and glass chandeliers), this upbeat hotel is very future focused.

From what I can glean, during warmer months the pool and surrounding terrace are a buzz with singles looking to mix. Since we'll be venturing down during December with toddler in tow it's probably for the best we're missing out on all the action. Fortunately we'll still enjoy the Italian linens in the suites, Monarch restaurant and the spa. Ahh, the joys of plush travel!

Why are we Houston bound? Proximity aside (it's a quick three hour trip away), we love our neighboring city to the south. This particular trip is important for two reasons... first: the Mr. has business to handle. That should only take about a day. I on the other hand, have shopping to do. Houston now boasts one of the only two RH Baby & Child locations in existence (yay, Texas!), and I need to go see furniture and bedding in person before making purchases. Business and pleasure, a nice mix.

Venti Girl Holiday Gift Guide: The Scent-sational Sibling

Ahhh, home fragrances. We all want something different from them. Some long for their homes to smell of fresh baked cookies. Others pine for the scent of the great outdoors. I tend to gravitate towards citrus-y scents in summer and spring, and warmer more enveloping fragrances during cooler temps.

On my olfactory senses now: NEST's Pumpkin Chai candle. Oh, my, goodness. By name alone I'd never think this would be my fragrance, but somehow the notes come together to create this seductive aroma that I cannot get enough of right now.

If you have a hard to shop for sister or an even choosier brother, it's hard to go wrong with a prettily packaged candle. I imagine they will swoon for the scent as much as I... but if not, the posh packaging makes it easy as pie for them to add to their regifting closet. And really, isn't that a win-win proposition for us all?

Design: The Third Layer

I just uncovered a charming interview with the newest member of Team Zoe (no, not adorably dressed little Skylar), Jeremiah Brent.

During the last Bravo season of the show, Brent was introduced as a new stylist. To say it took him a while to gain footing is an understatement. True, at an operation like Rachel Zoe Inc, there's no time to learn the ropes. You must somehow magically come in at your top performing level and require little to no assistance or guidance.

Sound unreasonable? yes, but in small companies like hers (and any currently am or have been a part of) that's just how it is. Jump in with both feet, both arms and swim like a fish... or you'll quickly find yourself cast aside. It's just how lean operations work.

In Jeremiah's case, he was attempting to break into a new field. He's an interior designer at heart and by experience. Is there some crossover between chandeliers and chandelier earrings? Yes... but Team Zoe operates at a higher echelon than simply taking a fitting room job at Bergdorf Goodman. There are careers at stake, reputations at hand and carefully handled professional relationships at risk.

In the end, his true calling in interiors won him a seat at the glossy white Zoe table. He masterfully decorated Rachel's private home (with an incomprehensible two week time limit), created a posh haven for baby Skylar with little or no direction and ultimately sealed the deal with his concept for the brand's store-in-store spaces within Bloomingdales.

I love that Roger and Rachel found a way to leverage Jeremiah's true gifts. He's been designing spaces since he was a child. He shares in the interview that his true talent lies in his ability to create that often missed "third layer" of a space. The elements of an office, bedroom or boutique that take it from pretty to personal. Truthfully, this is the trickiest part of design to master, and for him to recognize this as one of his sharpest skills is very self-aware of him.

Mundane to Marvelous

When I think of successful people in whose footsteps I'd love to follow, those with lifestyle brands are always front of mind. I previously lumped Trina Turk in with successful forces in the fashion industry. Even her line of outdoor fabrics counted as fashion to me, as it seemed a natural extension of her wildly successful prints normally seen on dresses and other items from her apparel line.

But look at her now. Firmly standing with one foot deeply rooted in fashion (including preppy menswear) and the other reaching deeper and deeper into interiors. No longer limited to just pillows, Trina's colorful world now contains candles, stationery, bedding and other household items. What kind, you ask? It might surprise you to discover that she offers such common items such as the dustpan. Leave it to this master of print and pattern to enliven humble household items and elevate them to superstar status. Scissors? Measuring tape? A toolbox? You bet. And they're pretty good looking to boot.

So what about you? What master of their field or mogul do you wish to emulate? Who in your view has blazed a professional trail worthy of admiration?

For me it's those with a brand beneath them. Actual objects with their brand name boldly emblazoned on them. Kelly Wearstler. Trina. Suzanne Kasler. DVF. These are the first names that come to mind, as well as the always on top Barbara Barry. It's about taking the design within and seeing it on shelves and on pretty tables. It's about the realization of a lifelong dream.

Gilty As Charged

The sheer number of flash sale sites out now is dizzying. I know.. I know... with a little more time I could be snapping up Prada at dime store prices and the ideal J Brand jeans at barain basement prices. Occasionally, when the planets align and the heavens move, I do score such good deals. But most of the time I have to turn a blind eye to the constant flow of deals and steals.

The one site that does shine through the fog for me in the lovechild of Decorati and GIlt. I really, really like Gilt Home. Part of this is is the design. I tend to favor those sites that are beautifully designed (think: super clean layout, easily navigable, absence of clutter), have terrific iPhone apps (I shop via my phone in bed late at night) and have the actual luxury goods at good prices. Gilt Home is one of the few flash sale sites to master the online shopping trifecta.

Obviously I love the focus on gorgeous interior goods. In fact the latest parade of pretty wares from Barclay Butera is fresh, desirable and moderately priced. I'm also digging this new and improved layout. A vertical column of goods on the left... related goods near the bottom... the object of your affection front and center. It's a content rich site that never makes me feel claustrophobic or confused. It's a site that actually makes me want to nose around and find something to purchase. This is NOT a feeling I feel with most of these sites. So kudos to Shane Reilly and team for making even the most seasoned shopper feel like there's something new to be seen on this site.

Go ahead.. give it a whirl. But don't be surprised if you end up with a Ming Dynasty-inspired console in your shopping cart. The getting is so good that you might actually decide to bag your kill and bring those pretty goods home.

Waterworks Offers Online Shopping

File this under the "why wasn't this possible before?" category. Waterworks, quite possibly the ultimate in kitchen and bath outfitters, now offers an online shopping experience for customers. If you've never ventured into one of these incredible showrooms, this might not mean much to you. Lately they've been given a bit of press on television. Million Dollar Decorators stopped into a showroom, as did Guiliana and Bill in an episode in a recent season.

If you're redesigning your kitchen or bath - or are seeking an excuse to do so - you're in for a true treat. These are some of the loveliest fittings, fixtures, tubs and surfaces you're likely to find anywhere. While I hadn't noticed before, the online offerings feature apothecary products, furniture and lighting.

Before you start demolishing your fabulous kitchen on a food-centric holiday let me urge you to stop. Sit back and enjoy the feast with family and friends. Tomorrow when your local Waterworks showroom opens you can indulge in your remodeling fantasies. Besides... you don't want to buy a soaking tub online, do you? No. You don't.

Until the shops open mañana you should stay offline and enjoy the day of fabulous company. And you current kitchen and baths. Trust me... those fittings and surfaces will still be there tomorrow.

Lane Venture: High Point Market Showroom Tour

A lot goes into manufacturing beautiful, durable, quality furniture. So imagine the challenge of designing tables, chairs and beds to remain outdoors 24/7 for all twelve months of the year. Oh.. AND make them look and feel just as fabulous as your indoor furniture. It just can't be easy.

Lane Venture was another stop on Elaine Williamson's High Point Showroom tour and she was blown away by the gorgeous collections and the quality. I should have warned her... it's stunning! They even have a collection by Celerie Kemble that makes my stylish heart skip a beat. I had the pleasure of working with the Lane Venture team a few seasons back and was so impressed not only with their furniture, but with their commitment to quality and continuous improvements.

Note the shot of gorgeous Elaine above in their new balloon chair. How perfect for a sunny poolside afternoon! Although it's hard to think "outdoor living spaces" when the mercury is dropping outside... this really is the time to start planning and shopping for the warmer months.

Lane Venture is known for their world famous WeatherMaster line that can resist pretty much anything Mother Nature has up her clever sleeve. Top those frames with beautiful Sunbrella or Outdura fabrics and you're set. Bring on the elements!

They may be the "go to" source for weatherproof rattan, but many of their frames come fully upholstered. Check out this beauty. Could you die? It brings outdoor leisure to an entirely new level if you ask me. There's even a full assortment of dining options with this look. LOVE!

Drexel Heritage Tour: Up Close & Personal

I'm still continuing to receive great pix of the Drexel Heritage showroom last week's events. Had to share, as some of these are just sensational. When High Point Market rolls around the Coco Chanel tip "take one accessory off" rule need not apply when it comes to stylizing the showrooms. Merchandising is at a maximum and stylists use this as an opportunity to pull out all the stops.

Beyond the accessories... I always love the fabric selections they choose at Drexel. There's always a hint of curiosity there as I wonder how they imagined that combination and executed it so beautifully on their upholstery. Chintz and leather? Punchy florals and menswear stripes? Somehow they make the unimaginable combinations work.

Look closely: do you see what I see? Is fringe back? I'm thinking so. Big fringe. While we're on the subject or details, contrasting welt is coming at us full force this fall. It looks like we could all use a little decorative edging in our lives and living rooms.

In terms of color, Drexel offered two extremes. Deep saturation on one hand. Pale monochromatic colorways on the other. And the key things we can't ignore is that the rising star of the industry is the chair. Not the front. Not the cushion... but the sides and back. More on this in a future post. Not the circular wood frame on the chair above. Baby got back in a big way.

Thomasville Furniture: High Point Market Showroom Tour

Another stop on the High Point Market Blogger tour was Thomasville. It's interesting to note that this brand is available at the retail level, meaning anyone can walk into a Thomasville showroom and make a purchase - no designer required. But for a commercially available line, Thomasville really steps it up when it comes to offering customizable pieces and boasting incredibly chic styles.

Another thing that sets this brand apart is their commitment to offering accessories for the home. Most brands establish a niche in furniture OR accessories... but Thomasville's product lineup says: come here for everything. Including, it should be noted, a really glamorous selection of bedding ensembles and lamps.

This is quite savvy on their part, as normally it's impossible to complete a room while shopping under the roof of a single brand. Rather than visit multiple showrooms and shop for weeks (or give up mid-hunt) you can find hardware, throws, coverlets, mirrors, wall art... you name it - all at a single showroom. By collaborating with designer brands the resulting look is high-end and has the air of a luxury interior designer's fingerprint. This extra merchandise gives customers the freedom to make a space uniquely their own (especially with those hardware options!) and provide for themselves a finished look that fully custom at a price they enjoy.

Drexel Heritage: High Point Market Showroom Tour

As you may recall, my great friend Elaine Williamson stood in for me on the High Point Market blogger tour. She and some of my favorite online (and offline) friends were shown around in style by brand representatives and the High Point Market Authority themselves. An insider's look at new collections, the customization process and emerging market trends.

Her biggest surprise was her own response to Drexel Heritage. Elaine wasn't as familiar with the brand and was impressed by the depth of their customization options, the frames available throughout the collections and the very high end appeal of this brand.

{Full disclosure: my company does some professional work with Drexel's parent company Furniture Brands, as well as a few of this company's sister brands... but that doesn't alter the fact that I am a genuine fan of Drexel's seriously hot pieces.}

The frames, the fabric selection, the wide array of custom finishes, the designer trim... this is no ordinary brand. Drexel offers tradition with a massive dose of glamour thrown in just for the sheer fun of it.

Throw in glamorous pieces like this Cloe Lamp Table (which I desperately need in my living room right now) and I'm a fan for life. One of the creative geniuses behind the success of this brand is Denise Alala. If you've not been in the showroom to meet this gorgeous force of nature, you're missing out. It's clear she has design genius in her veins. A few Markets back I had the pleasure of walking solo with her through the showroom and was so impressed not only with her style outlook, but her ability to render that vision flawlessly into the finished product.

Much like Pearson's Jennifer McConnell, Denise has seems to have a peephole into the future of design. She's a step or two ahead of the rest of the crowd, and if you're not following her cues you're going to miss out and wonder what just happened without you.

From Cover to Cover

When I gaze at my office book shelves I see that they are lined with terrific books. Not surprisingly, most of the titles are published by none other than Rizzoli. Again and again they produce masterful written works that caprivate the fashion and design savvy audience. Just when I think I have enough, I see a lengthy list of new releases that have me salivating.

Case in point... yesterday marked the release of the highly anticipated Christian Louboutin book. Swoon! Cannot wait to possess this incredible work. I love that Christian himself was disappointed the tome couldn't contain ALL of his glorious creations. I sense volume two won't be far behind. Be sure to get your manicured hands on what is sure to be a collector's piece.

Next up, Louis Vuitton: Architecture and Interiors. Could this get any better? My love of fashion, luxe craftsmanship and my interior design combined in one hardbound cover. Any of you who delight in the fanciful design of retail spaces and a brand's impact on architecture will surely covet this book. If you've traveled abroad (especially to Japan) you'll see just how dramatically Louis Vuitton has transformed the retail experience both inside and out.

And finally, the grande dame herself... Carine Roitfield. If ever a woman caused ripples in fashion and business, it's Carine. Considered a visionary and muse to many fashion giants, this controversial Vogue editrix opens up and shares French Vogue editorial tearsheets, behind-the-scenes look at campaign shoots and even an offers us an inside view into her creative thought process and sensibility. Carine Roitfield: Irreverent is a book I, a student of fashion and the imposing figures who shape the landscape of the business, must read.

Booking It: Michael S. Smith

It's hard to understate the professional impact of being the DC darling when it comes to interior design. Michael S. Smith, selected to be the interior design guru of choice when they outfitted the White House to suit their needs is just such a person. In this glossy new book he reveals his expertise and experience on high traffic areas of the home: kitchens and baths.

Yes, his clients often boast far larger budgets than the normal homeowner, but there are always universal truths in design. These two room in particular offer designers unusual challenges. They must be glamorous and impossibly clean looking... yet all necessary items must be readily within reach. This game of professional hide and seek would be problematic in the hands of an amateur, but Smith generously offers you his hard earned wisdom.

While this could have easily been just a book of glossy photos, Michael S. Smith: Kitchens and Baths is actually a well-composed and comprehensive resource book. Smith offers serious input on cabinetry choices, practical materials, reliable trade (and public) resources as well as other insider tips. I LOVE when designers do this. Yes, I love a book of pretty photos... but when they lay down the design law in short order the book becomes a very valuable resource.

While the rooms might be polar opposites (kitchens are often the center jewel of the home, and baths hidden luxuries) he offers interesting parallels on their relationship to us and the home. Each space requires strict order and design to serve their users well. Knowing this will help you approach each space with a fresh perspective - even if you just decide to reorganize a few cabinets.

So... What is New and What Is Next?

For those of you who weren't at the NYDC event a few weeks back, we wanted to follow up with Pearson's impossibly chic creative director Jennifer McConnell and ask the question on everyone's mind: What is new and what is next?

For a quick background, you have to realize that Jennifer's role with Pearson requires her to travel extensively in search of new techniques, new textiles, new ideas, etc. She is always, always a few steps ahead of trend and has an amazing eye for style. While global travel keeps her informed and curious, it's clear she possesses an innate flair for design. If Jennifer says it's en vogue, you can take that to the bank.

Best of all, she's bubbly, energetic and one of the most fun people I've had the pleasure to work with. Pearson has a true dynamo on their hands with her!

She took time to follow up and answer my questions about What's New, What's Next and shared more about the event. Read on to see what she has to say about the home fashion forecast and the talented company she enjoyed that evening.

Jennifer, we must know... what is new in interiors and furnishings that was evident at WNWN?
"We are definitely seeing a return to the 70’s. Whether it is 70’s glam or 70’s boho chic its taking front and center just like it is in fashion. Sparkly gold mixed with mirror feels like studio 54 disco glamour. Ikats and batiks feel much more earth mother sensible."

Were there signs of what we can expect next? Emerging trends?
"More color! Everyone is finally tired of the greys and ivories. Touches of gold everywhere from furniture to bathroom fixtures, and color is taking front and center – not just “pops” anymore."

You walked the Hickory Chair + Pearson showroom with Michelle from Lonny and the talented duo that is Tilton Fenwick... what elements stood out to them the most?
"I brought from High Point a quick sneak preview of some of our more exciting exclusive textiles for Fall 2011. Lots of color mixed with hand crafted looks; ikats, tie dyes, batiks. Oranges, fuchsias, raspberries and indigos. They generated some of the most excitement for the event – definitely the most photographs taken. Michelle loved one tie dye stripe so much she took it with her for hopefully the upcoming issue of Lonny! Keep your eyes peeled for it!"

"They also loved the number of mirrored pieces mixed with the menswear looks. Michelle commented that they keep the herringbone and wool upholstery from feeling too masculine."

"And they both adore the 9651 shagreen bunching table!"

The event was a huge success by all accounts. We heard you were selling pieces directly off the floor to keep up with demand! Which item was the runaway hit for the evening? Or were there several?
"Everyone loved the small occasional pieces! They are so perfect for NYC living when space is limited so pieces have to wear multiple hats. In particular I saw one 9645 silver leafed table and one 9651 shagreen bunching table be carried out by very happy shoppers!"

How did the crowd respond to your newest additions, like the new chaise sectional or the swanky new sofa?
"The chaise sectional combination is just perfect for NYC living. A number of people commented on how decadent it is to own a sectional in NYC because it takes up so much space. However, they loved this version because both pieces are very small scale, and both can ride up in a passenger elevator (no freight elevator needed!) For such a small footprint, it seats quite a few, and of course looks stylish while doing it!"

Anything you spotted in another showroom or heard from the attendees that was unexpected or downright fabulous?
"There were so many amazing events going on – Sub Zero had celebrity chefs cooking gourmet meals in their showroom. Neirmann Weeks had a silver leafing demonstration happening – if you ever get the chance to see a demo like that make the time! It is an amazing dying craft! Laura Kirar was supporting her gorgeous new collection for Arteriors. There was so much going on, that it was too much to see in one night!"

There's always party somewhere at High Point Market. This year the fete to attend is the star studded Rizzoli book signing. Sunday from 4 - 5:30 PM in the Courtyard at Market Square you will be elbow to elbow with some of the brightest stars and biggest names in the business.

Bring a tote to lug away all of those terrific hardback books. These are more than just pretty coffee table books to decorate a space, they are incredible published works you'll want to devour when you have a free moment. They are indeed seriously delicious.

The Wonderful World of Wearstler

Now that we K-Dub fans have caught our collective breath I can showcase some of my favorite pieces from her brand new site. Yes, Kelly Wearstler, polarizing design celebrity, is now selling her goods directly to consumers through her own site. I have to say... go Kelly! I love that she's doing this. Happy Place

As you know, I have a predeliction for fabulous closets. Kerri Russel's walk-in closet has an earthy quality to it that differs from my need for glossy perfection, but the sunlight, large mirror and impossibly sweet display of shoes makes me so happy for her. Every girl needs a happy place. This one is surely one of hers.

The Ultimate Backsplash

Do I have your permission to faint from design overload? This ogee backsplash is beyond gorgeous. Wow! According to the sourcing info on TraditionalHome.com, it is the “Treble”/Bourbon Street tile in Caramel from Artistic Tile's Jazz Glass Collection. Look how gorgeous it it against that copper faucet and the remarkable countertop. I'm bookmarking this for my next kitchen. I'd love this with white cabinets and dreamy counters. Okay... enough typing. I'm going to bliss out and imagine the rest of this room. Ciao!

Objêt D'Art: La Tour Eiffel

Holy Parisian hotness. An 8' model of the Eiffel Tower. Yes. Yes, I'll have some of that, please.

Described as:

"...architectural model is comprised of hand-cut pieces that take one artisan nearly 2 months to complete. Crafted of American oak, it is rendered in meticulous detail, from the arched base to the latticework sides and delicate spire."

Side note: I love that the catalog-writing team at Restoration Hardware needed to add "Decorative use only; not a toy and not for climbing" to the bullet points. Get your tall taste of Paris here. But please, no climbing.

Who's The Boss?

The biggest sin I see repeatedly in home design is fear. Fear of being yourself. While I agree that you should dress and style your home for the life you WANT to live... it is important in both instances to design (or dress) fearlessly with things that YOU love.

Most commonly it is a desire to design so that the husband feels "at home" as much as the wife. But let me tell you something... most of them don't care. They just want the decisions made and the wife to be happy. You know the old saying, "happy wife, happy life"...? It's so true. If she (knowingly or unknowingly) designs the home to suit his tastes she may not "go for it" the way she would have if she lived alone. In the end, he'll hear how this isn't quite right or she doesn't really like that. It prolongs the process and makes the husband less open to her future urges to redesign a space. Design without fear and you'll design the space you want to live in for years to come. Both partners will be happy. It's true.

The other side of this is seeing homeowners designing for real or imaginary friends. What will "they" think? It doesn't matter. At all. You live in your home. Friends and family visit on occasion. A woman (or man, for that matter) should never, ever be plagued by insecurities about what others think. It will steal your daily joy of living.

Your home is just that: your intimate, private dwelling. It should be the space you long to be, the environment in which you feel at most (you guessed it...) at home.

Do yourself a favor: dress, live and decorate without fear. Be bold, courageous and full of confidence about your style decisions - both large and small. They matter.

Live the life YOU want to live. Style yourself and your surroundings the way that YOU wish to style them. In doing so you'll discover a richer more satisfying experience every single day. The bonus? I assure you, you'll discover you have opinions you nevr honored and style you had not allowed yourself to discover. Trust thy self.

Featured Firm: Dallas Design Group

There are design firms, and then there are design firms. Imagine my delight when I happened upon the site for the Dallas Design Group, an award-winning firm right here in town. Normally these sites require you to dig in to the gallery or portfolio section to be fully impressed. Not this one.

From the moment you hit the front page you are treated to these outstanding images and several "oh, by the way, did you see these?" award notations near the footer. My, my, my have they been working hard! If you really need to be bowled over, take a peek at their awards page. Even the harshest critic can't deny their repeat winning performances - collecting nearly every award possible year after year.

Consider me a fan.

Show Me Your Dallas

I've really got to get better about tooting my own horn. So here we go. Toot too, beep beep as they say in disco songs!

Remember the Show Me Your Dallas feature I began a few months back? The point was to connect with these amazing girls I'd met online before moving to Dallas last winter. Each of them were given the opportunity to show me "their" version of this incredible city and play the role of stylish tour guide. Let me tell you, these girls did NOT disappoint!

It became such an affair that the Dallas Morning News got word of my adventures in coolfinding. A few calls, a few emails, an interview and photoshoot later... voila. Front (and back!) page of the Life & Style section on the 4th of July weekend issue of the paper. Full color. How's that for a welcome to town? Since the online article is only available to subscribers, you'll need to download the PDF here.

Why did I do it? There's nothing like exploring a city through the eyes of local experts and fellow design-minded girls. And trust me, the ones I chose were amazing at highlighting amazing hidden resources and fabulous boutiques.

Who was this chic posse? Interior designer extraordinaire Emily Johnston, award-winning designer Elaine Williamson, IBB showroom co-owner and designer Shay Geyer, talented designer Kyle Knight, graphic designer and social media vixen Sandra Evans, local Dallas interior design celebrity Beth Dotolo were first on the schedule.

Honestly, everyone was amazing, gracious and incredibly generous with their time and attention. I couldn't have chosen a better team to go on playdates with. The best part? Loved them all and genuinely feel it was th ebest way to kickstart offline friendships. Dallas is a city of fabulius people, but these girls are all at the top of their game and it shows.

There are still more posts to come, as it takes a while to recreate the whirlwind tours of the city on the blog. But stay tuned, as I have three very talented girls left to feature: The talented and stylish Haley Schultheis of Nonsense & Senibility, product designer Erin of Global Views, and interior designer Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25. We completed our outings ages ago but I've been too caught up with client work to post them. Girls... stay tuned ;)

And So To Bed

Surely you've noticed I'm obsessed with daybeds. Imagine my delight when And So To Bed reached out to me to introduce their gorgeous line of bedroom furnishings to me. My eyes zoomed in on the fanciful Nautilus daybed in Silver Leaf. Their styling makes the dreamy, shimmery bed look as though it's begging to be slept in... soon. Sadly it's midday on a Wednesday and I have many hours until a blissful nap is mine to take. But for you on the other side of the globe... enjoy turning in for the evening. Especially if you slumber in something as gorgeous as this. Dream on. ;)

Fresh Prince, Indeed

I knew Will & Jada had it going on. But I had no idea they lived in the Garden of Eden. Have you seen this spread in Architectural Digest? See that gazebo in the final photo? Will says the right answers just "come to him" out there. Talk about a private oasis. I am absolutely swooning over their living room, though. Architectural goodness courtesy of Stephen Samuelson only adds to the incredible view the room affords. I could lose myself in this space for hours. It is, as Jada says, "earthy and organic" but it oozes modern sophistication. All I can say is that hard work has paid off for one of the biggest self-made men in Hollywood. This 25,000 square foot home is a testament to the power of a dream, goals and a persistent, urgent need to be the very best you can be. Fresh indeed.

Mellon Drops

Although it's against my brain wiring to want to "be" anyone else, there are certain persons for whom I might bend those rules a bit just to see how it felt to be them for a day. Take Tamara Mellon for a moment. Where to we begin? Legs for miles, a head for business, head of a famed Jimmy Choo empire, a shoe collection every girl dreams of (after all, if it's missing from her shoe wardrobe she simply designs it and - voila! - it appears in the product lineup and invariably in her closet. And then there's the matter of her NYC apartment. I can't stop gawking over it. More importantly, she's powerful, fun woman with a social calendar build to actually put those glamorous things to use.

Fortunately for me, an out of body experience isn't necessary. With a little focus I too can build a Choo Choo train of shoes to line my closet walls. And I can certainly recreate a few elements from her swanky Manhattan pad and equally swanky lifestyle.

First, there's the matter of that light fixture in her living room. Do you see it? I can't take my eyes from it. I love it. I need it. I want it. Right over my desk. Jewelry for the ceiling. It is nothing short of hot.It seems to be a George Kovacs fixture, although it is remarkably similar to this Janice Minor fixture as well. Regardless: it is mine. And that gets me one step closer to lifting some of her swanky style.

And since I'm in "King Midas" mode, loving every gold thing in sight,we might as well head on over to 1stDibs.com and see what else I can find to get me felling Mellon-y. These Maison Jansen nesting tables ought to do it. But since Tamara has a predeliction for wild things, I suspect this ram's head coffee table would be a fron runner in her shopping spree. After all, her enviable desk is made from a brass ram's head base - and it is to die for. But let's focus on the piece de resistance... her iconic white tufted leather sofa. Id you're really going for her look, it's a must. This one from 1stDibs should do nicely.

Add in a dash of apple green, sequins and towering heels and you've got the perfect Mellon Drop cocktail. Stay tuned as we stalk more celebrity homes and choose some of the key elements of style necessary to recreate those look. Ciao, bella!

That's Quite the Story

Designer Sara Story creates rooms that have much to say. These two photos serve up two of my favorite design elements: chinoiserie wallpaper and glorious orange Hermes boxes. A girl needs both in her life and her home. At least that's my philosophy.

Like most creatives, travel is what replenishes her and fills her mind with new design ideas. She shares:

Rock Stars

All good love stories should end this way. In the quest to find the ideal engagement ring, Monique Péan ended up creating her own line of sustainable and cruelty-free diamond jewelry. Each piece is handcrafted and made of raw diamond pieces and recycled pieces. Each piece of her "wearable art" is incredibly beautiful and heirloom quality.

Oh, Martyn

Watching Mission Dollar Decorators has highlighted two things: 1) supreme confidence is absolutely necessary in an interior designer. 2) Martyn, Kathryn & Mary are true rock stars. The other cast members offer me entertainment and add levity to the show, but the heavy lifting is clearly done by Mary, Kathryn and the ever-charming Martyn. I love them all and admire their design prowess each week.

In terms of aesthetic I fall clearly in "camp Mary". But Martyn has this magnetic pull and a seemingly effortless way of conjuring up his masterpieces. While some spaces are quite loud, he does exercise quiet luxe from time to time.

Do enjoy these photos from his site. And by all means... please tell me you're as hooked on this revealing show as I am. I'm certain I'm not alone in my appreciation of the show. It is refreshing to see (for once) what really goes on behind the scenes of installations, sourcing and planning. Granted we see only a small portion of the process, but some pressures and challenges are universal. It's nice, therefore, to see that even celebrity designers are not immune to pressure to perform.

I will say this about Martyn. he has absolute range. I think I know his brash style (think Sharon Osbourne's LA apartment) and then he wows me with a sinfully seductive room like that for Daisy Fuentes. He is versatile and has a wide range of experience to pull from.
