Obsession: Ebanista

You have those days where you feel like you'e seen it all. You've reached the far corners of the furnishings universe and there are no new catalogues to peruse, no new brands to discover and no unexpected surprises. And just as that moment you find it. It. "The" brand you'd been seeking. Those pretty pieces you've been coveting. The deliciousness your eyes have been eager to devour.

Whoever said less is more must not have realized the satisfaction of maximalism. A silver leaf here, a bit of gilding there, more patina here and a dash of sparkle there. All with a sophisticated air delivered with restraint. I know, I know... how can maximalism and restraint coexist? Easily when you're looking at classic pieces with time-tested silhouettes. May I introduce you to Ebanista... my happy place.

Feeling Bookish: Grand Entrance

The moment you step foot in my home you are greeted with a teensy glimpse of my book collection. I love books. The bigger and thicker, the better. But what does it take to make it to my entrance console? Great photography and incredible content. Large scale never hurt either.

Today's tabletop mix offers a few favorites... Parisian Interiors (a must-have design book if there ever was one), Classical Chinese Furniture (a beautiful reference book that will give you a much better appreciation for the origin of Eastern influences on furniture) and a massive tome on one of my idols, Leonardo da Vinci.

The key to hoarding, I mean owning, books? Surround yourself with books you love. Don't invest in them solely for their popularity (Tom Ford book, anyone?) or good looks. Books should inspire and inform. Yes, they make fantastic looking accessories, no one can argue that. Yet there's an authenticity that comes through when you have read them or at least gazed longingly at their beautiful photography. Fortunately, most design books practically beg to be flipped through and admired before placing them carefully on the shelf or tabletop.

In the case of Parisian Interiors, you'll want to keep it at the top of your stack. I assure you, anyone with an interest in architecture or design will pull it our repeatedly just to search for inspiration. This book is loaded with fantastic photography of no less than twenty private Paris residences. It's a keeper!

High Point: The Best of (Part Deux)

I can't gush enough about my trip to Maitland-Smith this year. The individual pieces were just exquisite. In addition to a few pieces I mentioned in a previous post, here were some of the items that still have dreaming.

Italian Empire chairs, an elegant recamier that leaves me imagining myself a lady of leisure in another era, a center table with beautiful inlaid marquetry (I LOVE this table) and of course... that glamorous cream settee in the top photo. My office chair is actually the sister product to that settee. I adore it! It is just as chic in person as one might expect, with hand-painted finish and gold accents.

The Maitland experience is a bit like walking through the antiquities section of a top ranked museum. Individual pieces are so lovely and unique that you can't imagine them being produced by anyone in our impatient generation. You're almost expecting to see a plaque located nearby explaining that this was one of Marcus Aurelius's campaign pieces borrowed from the Louvre. They are just that lovely.

Another example of something I'd never have done myself, but I'm thrilled when I see it. Croc embossed leather in teal and chocolate look AMAZING on this classic French Bergere chair. The nailhead detail adds an extra bit of edge.
The ombre effect of this pillow was subtle enough to make it feel classic. This fabric seemed to be the perfect marriage of Ikat and Flock in neutral tones. And note: fringe was everywhere this season. Something to remember when designing your upholstered pieces.

Although this photo focuses on the lovely tablescaping in the foreground, I'm actually vibing on the mixed use of fabrics on the sofa behind it. Note the neutral base fabric, the pretty blue silk trellis cushion and the more ethnic lumbar pillow. There's a lot going on and it all mixes beautifully to produce an elegant and classic sofa.

More of Denise's savvy textile mixtures and... note that AMAZING travertine topped table. Mais oui! I don't see him on the web site yet so he must be new... but he's handsome. I love the coppery bronze legs and the lower shelf. Perfect for holding more art books.

In my Drexel post I commented on many of their lovely silhouettes and the general atmosphere of the showroom. But when I look back at what I most drooled over in High Point, Drexel Heritage's fabrics come to mind.

Denise Alala, VP of Upholstery Design for the brand, provides a magical mix of textures and colors that are sexy without being overtly feminine or masculine. There are touches of glamour delivered by shimmering surfaces and touchable textures. But you'll also see handsome plaids and classic patterns that transcend styles and decades.

I really appreciate Denise's ability to consistently select pretty textiles that also have wonderful hand. I would summarize the Drexel Heritage look as "sensible sophistication." You get the impression that these aren't just pleasant to look at, they are designed with quality and durability in mind.

High Point Market: Magical Maitland-Smith

I still remember my first trip to Maitland-Smith several years ago. How do you explain such a brand to those who aren't familiar? Do they design furniture? Do they design lamps? Do they design accessories? I now know the answer. They design objets d'art. They truly do. Each and every piece is painstakingly detailed and completely beautiful. Let me show you some of my favorites...

First, the Renaissance Chaise. There's not a single element I'd wish to change about this piece. It is lovely and amazing. I sat on this piece in the showroom during High Point Market and felt so very Zsa Zsa Gabor. All I need is a white fur coat, bigger diamonds and a glass of champagne. Garçonne!

And now for the desk that made my knees weak. Both of these pieces were from what they had dubbed the "Socialite" grouping. Like the chaise above, this desk has deep European influences and conjures images of a cosmopolitan lifestyle where the heftiest task of the day is ordering fresh flowers and penning a few thank you notes. An enviable life and exquisite furnishings to complement such a lifestyle.

This beautiful desk has a leather top and a curvaceous silhouette. It is so incredibly pretty. Wouldn't this make the loveliest blogging perch? I have to say yes.

As I toured the showroom at High Point Market, I came across a few entire areas that made me gasp. First was the Prep School room. If ever a room made me think of Mr. Venti, this was it! Think varsity sports, academia and long discussions about pre-Renaissance Greek history. If you imagine fresh faced young men in khaki pants and navy blue wool blazers with brass buttons, you've nailed the vibe of this incredible room. Each piece individually designed and crafted to perfection.

This particular table above is stunning in person. In an aged Regency finish, it has a reeded single pedestal on a tri-pod base. But the crowning glory of the table is its heraldic lion inlaid top. Isn't that gorgeous? Such unique detail done in such a tasteful way. My husband would LOVE this occasional piece. Ten year anniversary, perhaps? I'll keep that in mind when it rolls around.

I could go on forever about the many wonders of Maitland-Smith, but what you really need to know is that they are magical. They offer everything imaginable. Incredible lamps, surprisingly modern pieces, accessories so luxurious they'll please the most discerning client, upholstery... the list goes on. They inventory is rich and interesting and is clearly designed with the true luxury clientele in mind.

Bonnie Cedolia, the Marketing Coordinator for the brand, was so gracious with her time. She patiently walked me through a personal tour of the showroom and answered my many questions about the brand. As you might guess, clients who come to this showroom tend to write their orders in the spot. These items are so unique and so intricate that it would be impossible to remember the details once returning home. Knowing this, they cater to this need and make it easy for their well-heeled clientele to stroll through the showroom identifying the specific treasures they'll take back to their firms, department stores and showrooms.

Maitland-Smith is truly an experience of its own. I can't say enough wonderful things about the products or the staff. I know the pieces I've shown above focus on their old world glamour, but Maitland has a surprisingly diverse product mix. Mid-Century influenced collections, Art-Deco and contemporary silhouettes are all a part of their offerings.I think now you can see why I say they design objets d'art rather than furniture or accessories. You go to Maitland-Smith for items of quality and design so uncommon that you simply won't find them anywhere else. It's what draws their clients from all regions of the world to come see them at High Point. There simply isn't another brand quite like them.

HIgh Point Market: Design by Drexel Heritage

Trending at Market: hair on hide. It was everywhere. This chair was one of the best examples I've seen of the trend. Love the placement of such organic elements around such a finely crafted French style chair.

Another element seen repeatedly at Market: the quatrefoil. Rarely, however, is an entire piece of furniture formed in this classic shape. I loved this versatile occasional piece. Bedside chest, end table, accent table... you name it, this piece could fill that role. A really beautiful element in any room.

A stunning sofa rests in the bqckground with fabulous cream frame and blue trellis bench seat. Of course the styling in the showroom, as seen on the cocktail table in the foreground, is so good you simply have to stop and admire the grouping.

Always the best part of any showroom visit: the resource room! Drexel realy turns it out when it comes to fabric samples. I'd love to have my own fabric swatch inventory arranged this way in my home office. Isn't this delicious?

And of course, a French sofa with an incredible silhouette and a Gustavian Gray finish. I do have a weakness for these linen covered pieces with European stylng. A truly beautiful upholstered piece. And isn't that rug yummy?

Zebra, anyone? This particular fabric has an ombre effect to it, with the stripes having more intensity of color in the center and fading out slightly at the edges. Note how it was placed on this classic chair finished in silver leaf. Serious pop of drama.

One of the showroom tours I was most looking forward to at Market was Drexel Heritage. I've had a soft spot for in my designer heart for years for this brand. I love the sheer variety of the showroom and it's artisan appeal. But much of this stems from my appreciation of the talent of their creative director Denise Alala. She is one half of the creative team behind this luxurious furniture brand and never ceases to amaze me with her ability to evolve and surprise when it comes to new introductions for High Point Market.

Drexel Heritage doesn't have a "look" or a style. Their collections run the gamut between classic European pieces (like bergeres and French settees) and on-trend designs that clearly derive influences from runway fashion and modern culture (as is the case with the zebra & silver leaf chair above). It's this delicious visual melange that keeps your eyes from ever tiring during a showroom tour. Beyond every corner is a vignette in a completely different look that the one you just passed through.

The unifying quality, of course, is the "collected" look that Drexel does so well. Each piece is offered in a seemingly endless array of finishes. Have that iron bed painted chippy antique white or do it up in rich red. The choice is yours and the showroom reflects this attention to personalization. Their upholstery selection knows no bounds either. From shimmering wovens to vibrant prints, the beauty of their textiles is always a treat for the eyes.

Beyond what they offer, the mood at Drexel is always quite sexy. Lights are dimmed just so. Vignettes are styled so richly that you want to move right in. It's such a lush space that you want to occupy not just the space but the lifestyle that the styling implies. Design books are scattered about, fresh flowers are scattered about in vases, art supplies are gathered here and there. This is what good showroom styling is all about. Drexel is selling an artisan lifestyle and I love it.

While I was there I was able to spend time with longtime online (and now real) friend Stacey Bewkes of Quintessence Blog, Ronda Rice Carman of All the Best Blog (a VERY longtime online friend whom I've finally had the pleasure to meet & spend time with) as well as the always lovely Meg BIram of Mimi and Meg. This was a fantastic group of girls to be on tour with and it was so nice to finaly get that offline time with "my girls" - especially in a stylish environment like the Drexel space.

Books + Autumn = Bliss

I don't know about you, but I LOVE getting mail. Good mail, that is. Books, magazines, boxes from Nordstrom, Sephora & Saks. You know the drill. But since it's fall we have a slew of new books that will be hitting the stands (and my desk) fairly soon.

One of them is New York Interiors: Bold, Elegant, Refined. Who doesn't love to see how other people live? I could look at spreads of people's home for days so long as the homes and (presumably the lives of the inhabitants) are interesting. This book promises to stand up well to both of those standards.

Do they collect art? Are they minimalists? Or - far more interesting to see - maximalists? Does their home reflect their love of travel or family or comfort? There's just so much to observe and learn when you look closely at how people live. And in a city as rich in diversity as New York, we're promised an intriguing mix of lifestyles and places real people - interesting people - call home.

If you walk in my house these days you'll see I'm having a "King Midas" moment. Gold. I love it. Can't get enough of it. And the truth is this: I'm no where near stopping. Gilded tables, golden bookcases, brassy nailheads. I would ask for an intervention, but I'm not the least bit interested in having someone put the brakes on my current love of oro. I. Love. It.

Lest you think I've lost my Venti mind, I assure you my passion for the precious metal is more jan Showers than Liberace. But I don't want to mislead you... I do have a place in my heart for unnecessary opulence.

What began as a simple love of the color has now become a style statement. I'm craving gilded Empire era chairs, gold leaf in my relief and even a little (can I admit this?) Rococo in my life.

A little may go a long way, but fully embracing your love of a design element is always more fun. Let your freak flag fly and allow your inner Zsa Zsa Gabor to emerge. After all, your home is for YOU. It should make you smile, make you proud and make you happy. And if that requires a little gilded this or that (as it does in my case), then so be it.

Front & Center

We moved into a new house in October and there are still several areas in need of my attention. The foyer for one. It's the first thing you see (obviously) when you open the door. And, like many Texas homes, the space is grand. Soaring ceilings are a delight when you're house shopping... but when it comes time to decorate the space you need to be sure that the furnishings can command a space visually and vertically.

Most days I'm thinking the usual suspects: glamorous console, massive mirror, the requisite mix of books, a chic lamp and a potted flower. End of story. Moving on...

Other days I entertain the idea of the unexpected. Maybe it's plush seating and a massive piece of art. Maybe it's two swanky chairs flanking a handsome round entry table. Any of the above can work.. the question is which is best for our home.

Looking at the above example I have to say I'm smitten with the idea of a settee. If I go for it, the above foyer will certainly be an image I hold in my head as I sketch it up. Isn't this stunning?

Love You to Pieces

A few weeks ago several magical events happened seemingly at once. We brought home a beautiful baby girl... and I won a very luxurious prize from one of my favorite boutiques. Pieces, famed Atlanta home decor shop of Lee Kleinhelter, awarded me this amazing cashmere "Love" pillow.

The timing was so apropos, as it seems I won the prize just as we had our little once. But might I also add that I was smitten when I discovered it was Italian cashmere? **Swoon!** It immediately won a special spot in my bedroom (and my life) for its versatility and comfort. Just one touch and I was hooked. It is the ultimate lumbar pillow, let me assure you.

The only challenge? I now discovered it comes in a variety of colors. Most notably? PINK!!! How can I not own the pink one? If you are (somehow) not familiar with Pieces, know that Lee has an amazing eye for style and an uncanny ability to offer what's missing in the marketplace.

There are no mass produced items are found in her boutique. Items are sources from far and wide. Some quirky. Some once of a kind. All undeniably intriguing. Adding a few well chosen items from Pieces to your home will certainly add that "certain something" to a space. That "something" is a tinge of the undeniable cool that Lee offers all of us... one piece at a time.

Thank you so much, Lee, for the little bit of love. It arrived at a vry special moment for us!

Joy of Spring

Planning my daughter's fourth birthday party has unleashed my inner entertaining diva. She's been hiding since the holidays it seems. It's a welcome shift, and I think a timely one since spring has arrived.

So in the course of planning a fete for a dozen squealing children I've been plotting and planning my seasonal tablescapes. A few items I think are key to keep your tabletop seasonal but not "theme-y" when entertaining.

1. Fresh flowers. Need I say more? I suggest a massive bouquet of either a singular color or a single variety of flower. Let the blooms speak for themselves.

2. Colorful place settings. Have fun here, especially for dining al fresco. Spring is all about color.

3. A clear glass decanter or apothecary jar filled with... anything! I love these with candies, fruits or pretty objects. Don't overthink this. A few blooms floating in water look lovely as well.

4. Pillows. Yes... you're dining outside, but that's no reason to leave guests in search of comfort.

5. Adorn the front door with a wreath. Set the tone from the moment company arrives... it'll lay the foundation for a festive gathering.

6. Vintage inspired birdcages. These are lovely and make for clever tabletop centerpieces if you place candles inside. I suggest flameless pillars to transform these into gorgeous lanterns.

The key to any spring affair... relax. It's advice I need to heed myself. Guests can't unwind and enjoy if the host is uptight or rushed. Plan, plan, plan ahead... but by all means on the day of the party be sure the only thing you need to style is your hair. ;)

Outdoor Luxe: Southampton Style

I was admiring the Tory Burch estate photos the way one admires overly fussy cuisine. I liked it. I appreciated it for all its complexity... but it just wasn't to my taste. Patterns... lots of them. Prints. Chintz. And more pedigreed pieces than most people will encounter in their time here on earth.

And then... I happened upon these photos of her pool house and the grandeur that is her outdoor living space. Consider me sold. I decided right then and there that if I had to take this property as-is I would do it just for the phenomenal poolside lifestyle.

Might I add... the property is stunning. Absolutely stunning... I would just need to start anew with the interior design to live there myself. But Tory... what a lovely retreat you've created for yourself. I applaud your incredible success and the incredible life you have created for yourself. And as for that pool house? I do hope you entertain their frequently... it's a magical addition to your home.

Bold in Black & White: Kate Spade

While I'm not your typical full blown Kate Spade fan, I do love her ability to consistently churn out poppy, happy items. Her latest foray into home goods that serve up Jonathan Adler-worthy "anti-depressive" items is her Florence Broadhurst collection. Be sure to check out the full décor shop to see just how positively cheerful this basic pairing of colors can be when used to display Japanese blossoms. It's downright giddy if you ask me!

My pick? The tableware, of course. And while there is no espresso cup available, I love the idea of adding these "tidbit" plates to serving arsenal for a party.

Pet Beds for Fashion Forward Fido

Frankly, I haven't seen many advancements in the pet bed industry. I've seen better looking pillows and more plush fabrics used for those "domes" we all see... but nothing previously on the market was upscale enough to place next to your high end home furnishings.

I'm happy to say that I now stand corrected. On my desk is a lovely book of sample photography and information on designer Katherine Elizabeth's Pet Design Furniture. She calls it furniture because, quite frankly, it is furniture for your home that happens to accommodate dear Fido. This is no simple plump pillow with a bolster surround that you place on the floor of your laundry room. These are elevated, custom finished pieces made of wood strong enough to support up to 200lbs of puppy love. These oval-shaped creations are crafted of a double wall of bendable wood elevated, mounted on a solid wood base over turned wood legs. Each piece is easily handsome enough to earn a space in your stylish living room. So good looking, in fact, that it'd be a shame to hide it in a back room.

Beds can be built to your specifications. Each one goes through a minimum of a 12 hour construction and finishing process. You'll choose your wood finish, your upholstery and may even opt for additional customization. Pillows and bedding are non-toxic and organic (as we've come to expect) and the unique Kapok filler makes the bed uniquely buoyant. Why does that matter? It offers your precious pet special skeletal support and comfort for muscular conditions as well as allergies. (Kapok fiber is also particularly water and mold resistant, great for those of us obsessed with clean!)

Form & Function

You can purchase all the pretty furnishings you want... but until you outfit a home with curious objects and personal belongings it still reads "showroom" not "yo' room." I tend to gravitate towards objects that are as interesting to look at as they are functional. Stacking boxes for storage. Trays for display. Bowls for a variety of purposes. Vases for their form and their intended purpose.

These pretty objects seen here add dimension and texture to a room while encouraging visitors to inquire about their origins. Duck's egg blue lacquer boxes, decorative shagreen bowls and a pierced stoneware vase (that I'd have sworn was coral) are just a few of the fantastic creations spied at Lille.

Venti Girl Holiday Gift Guide: The Scent-sational Sibling

Ahhh, home fragrances. We all want something different from them. Some long for their homes to smell of fresh baked cookies. Others pine for the scent of the great outdoors. I tend to gravitate towards citrus-y scents in summer and spring, and warmer more enveloping fragrances during cooler temps.

On my olfactory senses now: NEST's Pumpkin Chai candle. Oh, my, goodness. By name alone I'd never think this would be my fragrance, but somehow the notes come together to create this seductive aroma that I cannot get enough of right now.

If you have a hard to shop for sister or an even choosier brother, it's hard to go wrong with a prettily packaged candle. I imagine they will swoon for the scent as much as I... but if not, the posh packaging makes it easy as pie for them to add to their regifting closet. And really, isn't that a win-win proposition for us all?

Design: The Third Layer

I just uncovered a charming interview with the newest member of Team Zoe (no, not adorably dressed little Skylar), Jeremiah Brent.

During the last Bravo season of the show, Brent was introduced as a new stylist. To say it took him a while to gain footing is an understatement. True, at an operation like Rachel Zoe Inc, there's no time to learn the ropes. You must somehow magically come in at your top performing level and require little to no assistance or guidance.

Sound unreasonable? yes, but in small companies like hers (and any currently am or have been a part of) that's just how it is. Jump in with both feet, both arms and swim like a fish... or you'll quickly find yourself cast aside. It's just how lean operations work.

In Jeremiah's case, he was attempting to break into a new field. He's an interior designer at heart and by experience. Is there some crossover between chandeliers and chandelier earrings? Yes... but Team Zoe operates at a higher echelon than simply taking a fitting room job at Bergdorf Goodman. There are careers at stake, reputations at hand and carefully handled professional relationships at risk.

In the end, his true calling in interiors won him a seat at the glossy white Zoe table. He masterfully decorated Rachel's private home (with an incomprehensible two week time limit), created a posh haven for baby Skylar with little or no direction and ultimately sealed the deal with his concept for the brand's store-in-store spaces within Bloomingdales.

I love that Roger and Rachel found a way to leverage Jeremiah's true gifts. He's been designing spaces since he was a child. He shares in the interview that his true talent lies in his ability to create that often missed "third layer" of a space. The elements of an office, bedroom or boutique that take it from pretty to personal. Truthfully, this is the trickiest part of design to master, and for him to recognize this as one of his sharpest skills is very self-aware of him.

Mundane to Marvelous

When I think of successful people in whose footsteps I'd love to follow, those with lifestyle brands are always front of mind. I previously lumped Trina Turk in with successful forces in the fashion industry. Even her line of outdoor fabrics counted as fashion to me, as it seemed a natural extension of her wildly successful prints normally seen on dresses and other items from her apparel line.

But look at her now. Firmly standing with one foot deeply rooted in fashion (including preppy menswear) and the other reaching deeper and deeper into interiors. No longer limited to just pillows, Trina's colorful world now contains candles, stationery, bedding and other household items. What kind, you ask? It might surprise you to discover that she offers such common items such as the dustpan. Leave it to this master of print and pattern to enliven humble household items and elevate them to superstar status. Scissors? Measuring tape? A toolbox? You bet. And they're pretty good looking to boot.

So what about you? What master of their field or mogul do you wish to emulate? Who in your view has blazed a professional trail worthy of admiration?

For me it's those with a brand beneath them. Actual objects with their brand name boldly emblazoned on them. Kelly Wearstler. Trina. Suzanne Kasler. DVF. These are the first names that come to mind, as well as the always on top Barbara Barry. It's about taking the design within and seeing it on shelves and on pretty tables. It's about the realization of a lifelong dream.

Gilty As Charged

The sheer number of flash sale sites out now is dizzying. I know.. I know... with a little more time I could be snapping up Prada at dime store prices and the ideal J Brand jeans at barain basement prices. Occasionally, when the planets align and the heavens move, I do score such good deals. But most of the time I have to turn a blind eye to the constant flow of deals and steals.

The one site that does shine through the fog for me in the lovechild of Decorati and GIlt. I really, really like Gilt Home. Part of this is is the design. I tend to favor those sites that are beautifully designed (think: super clean layout, easily navigable, absence of clutter), have terrific iPhone apps (I shop via my phone in bed late at night) and have the actual luxury goods at good prices. Gilt Home is one of the few flash sale sites to master the online shopping trifecta.

Obviously I love the focus on gorgeous interior goods. In fact the latest parade of pretty wares from Barclay Butera is fresh, desirable and moderately priced. I'm also digging this new and improved layout. A vertical column of goods on the left... related goods near the bottom... the object of your affection front and center. It's a content rich site that never makes me feel claustrophobic or confused. It's a site that actually makes me want to nose around and find something to purchase. This is NOT a feeling I feel with most of these sites. So kudos to Shane Reilly and team for making even the most seasoned shopper feel like there's something new to be seen on this site.

Go ahead.. give it a whirl. But don't be surprised if you end up with a Ming Dynasty-inspired console in your shopping cart. The getting is so good that you might actually decide to bag your kill and bring those pretty goods home.

Drexel Heritage Tour: Up Close & Personal

I'm still continuing to receive great pix of the Drexel Heritage showroom last week's events. Had to share, as some of these are just sensational. When High Point Market rolls around the Coco Chanel tip "take one accessory off" rule need not apply when it comes to stylizing the showrooms. Merchandising is at a maximum and stylists use this as an opportunity to pull out all the stops.

Beyond the accessories... I always love the fabric selections they choose at Drexel. There's always a hint of curiosity there as I wonder how they imagined that combination and executed it so beautifully on their upholstery. Chintz and leather? Punchy florals and menswear stripes? Somehow they make the unimaginable combinations work.

Look closely: do you see what I see? Is fringe back? I'm thinking so. Big fringe. While we're on the subject or details, contrasting welt is coming at us full force this fall. It looks like we could all use a little decorative edging in our lives and living rooms.

In terms of color, Drexel offered two extremes. Deep saturation on one hand. Pale monochromatic colorways on the other. And the key things we can't ignore is that the rising star of the industry is the chair. Not the front. Not the cushion... but the sides and back. More on this in a future post. Not the circular wood frame on the chair above. Baby got back in a big way.

Thomasville Furniture: High Point Market Showroom Tour

Another stop on the High Point Market Blogger tour was Thomasville. It's interesting to note that this brand is available at the retail level, meaning anyone can walk into a Thomasville showroom and make a purchase - no designer required. But for a commercially available line, Thomasville really steps it up when it comes to offering customizable pieces and boasting incredibly chic styles.

Another thing that sets this brand apart is their commitment to offering accessories for the home. Most brands establish a niche in furniture OR accessories... but Thomasville's product lineup says: come here for everything. Including, it should be noted, a really glamorous selection of bedding ensembles and lamps.

This is quite savvy on their part, as normally it's impossible to complete a room while shopping under the roof of a single brand. Rather than visit multiple showrooms and shop for weeks (or give up mid-hunt) you can find hardware, throws, coverlets, mirrors, wall art... you name it - all at a single showroom. By collaborating with designer brands the resulting look is high-end and has the air of a luxury interior designer's fingerprint. This extra merchandise gives customers the freedom to make a space uniquely their own (especially with those hardware options!) and provide for themselves a finished look that fully custom at a price they enjoy.

So... What is New and What Is Next?

For those of you who weren't at the NYDC event a few weeks back, we wanted to follow up with Pearson's impossibly chic creative director Jennifer McConnell and ask the question on everyone's mind: What is new and what is next?

For a quick background, you have to realize that Jennifer's role with Pearson requires her to travel extensively in search of new techniques, new textiles, new ideas, etc. She is always, always a few steps ahead of trend and has an amazing eye for style. While global travel keeps her informed and curious, it's clear she possesses an innate flair for design. If Jennifer says it's en vogue, you can take that to the bank.

Best of all, she's bubbly, energetic and one of the most fun people I've had the pleasure to work with. Pearson has a true dynamo on their hands with her!

She took time to follow up and answer my questions about What's New, What's Next and shared more about the event. Read on to see what she has to say about the home fashion forecast and the talented company she enjoyed that evening.

Jennifer, we must know... what is new in interiors and furnishings that was evident at WNWN?
"We are definitely seeing a return to the 70’s. Whether it is 70’s glam or 70’s boho chic its taking front and center just like it is in fashion. Sparkly gold mixed with mirror feels like studio 54 disco glamour. Ikats and batiks feel much more earth mother sensible."

Were there signs of what we can expect next? Emerging trends?
"More color! Everyone is finally tired of the greys and ivories. Touches of gold everywhere from furniture to bathroom fixtures, and color is taking front and center – not just “pops” anymore."

You walked the Hickory Chair + Pearson showroom with Michelle from Lonny and the talented duo that is Tilton Fenwick... what elements stood out to them the most?
"I brought from High Point a quick sneak preview of some of our more exciting exclusive textiles for Fall 2011. Lots of color mixed with hand crafted looks; ikats, tie dyes, batiks. Oranges, fuchsias, raspberries and indigos. They generated some of the most excitement for the event – definitely the most photographs taken. Michelle loved one tie dye stripe so much she took it with her for hopefully the upcoming issue of Lonny! Keep your eyes peeled for it!"

"They also loved the number of mirrored pieces mixed with the menswear looks. Michelle commented that they keep the herringbone and wool upholstery from feeling too masculine."

"And they both adore the 9651 shagreen bunching table!"

The event was a huge success by all accounts. We heard you were selling pieces directly off the floor to keep up with demand! Which item was the runaway hit for the evening? Or were there several?
"Everyone loved the small occasional pieces! They are so perfect for NYC living when space is limited so pieces have to wear multiple hats. In particular I saw one 9645 silver leafed table and one 9651 shagreen bunching table be carried out by very happy shoppers!"

How did the crowd respond to your newest additions, like the new chaise sectional or the swanky new sofa?
"The chaise sectional combination is just perfect for NYC living. A number of people commented on how decadent it is to own a sectional in NYC because it takes up so much space. However, they loved this version because both pieces are very small scale, and both can ride up in a passenger elevator (no freight elevator needed!) For such a small footprint, it seats quite a few, and of course looks stylish while doing it!"

Anything you spotted in another showroom or heard from the attendees that was unexpected or downright fabulous?
"There were so many amazing events going on – Sub Zero had celebrity chefs cooking gourmet meals in their showroom. Neirmann Weeks had a silver leafing demonstration happening – if you ever get the chance to see a demo like that make the time! It is an amazing dying craft! Laura Kirar was supporting her gorgeous new collection for Arteriors. There was so much going on, that it was too much to see in one night!"

Bring a tote to lug away all of those terrific hardback books. These are more than just pretty coffee table books to decorate a space, they are incredible published works you'll want to devour when you have a free moment. They are indeed seriously delicious.

Objêt D'Art: La Tour Eiffel

Holy Parisian hotness. An 8' model of the Eiffel Tower. Yes. Yes, I'll have some of that, please.

Described as:

"...architectural model is comprised of hand-cut pieces that take one artisan nearly 2 months to complete. Crafted of American oak, it is rendered in meticulous detail, from the arched base to the latticework sides and delicate spire."

Side note: I love that the catalog-writing team at Restoration Hardware needed to add "Decorative use only; not a toy and not for climbing" to the bullet points. Get your tall taste of Paris here. But please, no climbing.

Things I love...

Inspired by Tobi Fairley's recent series, I'm beginning a "things I love" compilation of my own. While I'll certainly dip into details as personal as my favorite nail polish, I'm kicking it off with a decorating weakness: mirrors. Big, small (but preferably gigantic, of course) I adore a great mirror. Lately, my favorites have an aged look and versatile silhouette. This baby above is from wshome.com. Perfect over a powder room vanity or demilune table.

My favorite, however, is the Alvita mirror from Horchow. A bit more embellished than my normal choice, but this beauty would look fabulous in my living room. I am KICKING myself for passing up the chance to snap it up last weekend at 30% off. Given the chance (hint, hint, Horchow!) I'd buy it in an instant (as well as a few other amazing items) if that promotion comes around again.

Design, while a serious business, is intendend to lift us up and add joy to our lives. Tough to do that with furrowed brows. I'd Always Suspected I Was Royalty

Do you remember my results when I last took the MyDeco StyleFinder quiz last July? It told me my taste in interiors was masculine. Listen honey... if there's one word that does NOT describe me, it's masculine. No way. No how. Not happening.

And then it dawned on me... online I tend to choose photos of spaces so clean they are almost spartan in their design. Super clean, super mod, super...manly? (I think not, but you get my drift.)
One look around my house and you'll see lush damask fabrics, silk dupioni draperies, curved legs on tables, rich reds, deep oranges and a host of other decidedly glamorous and (I'll just say it) feminine touches.

The closer I looked, the more I recognized a disparity between my real world possessions and style versus the spaces that I gravitated towards online. Do clean rooms and mod surroundings photograph better? Possibly. Do I lean towards uber-clean designs online because they offer visual order? Maybe. It's hard to say. And it likely doesn't matter. What does matter is that I was always bothered by those test results.

So much like a kid who is unhappy with his SAT scores...I tested, tested, tested again. And this time (some 12 months later) I keep coming up as "Home Queen" (didn't they mean Homecoming Queen?...hard to say, but at least Queen is in the title).

What's the Queen like? According to the site:

Almost accurate. I definitely have punches of vibrant color in the bedroom. But I do balance those bright feminine touches with a neutral base palette and classic elegance in my furnishings. Besides, this modern girl shares her bedroom with her modern husband. If I femmed it up too much he'd be wildly uncomfortable.

You're a modern maverick, a supremely elegant entertainer. At home, you have a fresh, contemporary dining style that is versatile and achievable on almost any budget... When it comes to entertaining, you're a real foodie who loves eating out in the best restaurants.

I like the word maverick (always have) and do enjoy fine restaurants. I'd say my dining room style is more plush than the results indicate, but again the results aren't terribly unfavorable.

It summed me up by stating quite simply:

Glorious and gorgeous, your home affirms your love of life.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I'm happy I took the test again. Truth be told, I suspect we all love learning about ourselves and our personalities - whether or not the results are perfectly accurate. It gives us a reason to indulge in a bit of "me" time and gain a sliver of an outside perspective on our ever-changing selves.

It seems to me that quizzes like this are comparable to modern day SAT scores for adults, and we're all curious to see how our peers have scored. Only in this case SAT means Style and Taste. Corralling the Coral

I've got to hand it to Williams-Sonoma Home. They've got moxie. Remember the issue of Domino that declared coral is over and designers should back away, far away from the motif? Quickly? Well, here we are in Spring '09 and they've got plenty of it.In fact, it appears they are single-handedly hoping to resuscitate the trend.

To be honest, I actually love coral in small doses. In these photos it's clearly overkill, as most merchandising shots are prone to be. But a little dash of coral - be it the color or the silhouette - I actually find quite appealing in the summer. But then again, I grew up near beaches and pieces of coral are just part of the summertime experience.

Granted, if you live longer than a 4 hour flight to the coast - any coast - it may be a bit odd to have pieces of coral in your home. But I'm willing to bet even the powers that be at Domino would have given you a pass if you acquired the coral objet de art on in the Maldives or Canary Islands.

That's what I love about design 'rules' though... they are meant to be ignored, broken, and twisted. The trick to coral? Inject the color into your summer palette with reckless abandon, but use the motif judiciously lest your designer friends poke fun at you for being so gauche. Unless of course, you can back those coral place settings up with tales of your snorkeling expedition off The Great Barrier Reef. In which case, feel free to go a bit wild.
