All Hail the Klismos

All Hail the Klismos

All Hail the Klismos

All Hail the Klismos

All Hail the Klismos

All Hail the Klismos

There are many classic forms I adore, but the klismos chair has long been a favorite. Whether it be a dining chair in painted wood or patio seating done in a bronzed finish, I can't get enough of that curved back & tapering saber leg silhouette.

For those who didn't sit through countless hours of art history classes, this style of chair hails from ancient (and I do mean ancient) Greece. In fact, the Iliad references this iconic furniture form in its text.

But fear not, you needn't live in Athens in 430 BC to dig the hipness of this stylish seat. It's just as relevant & welcome today - with its clean lines & modern styling - as it was when fabled satyrs sat upon them in bas-reliefs. But let's face it, if you can channel some of that Grecian wisdom or timeless style in your life, it will always be welcome. Art history degree not required.

What the beautiful people are saying...

Great post and love the chairs and learning the history behind them. The last photo is my favorite from the sofa seating to the lighting!! Have a great day.

Something to say, gorgeous?
