Throw Out the Rule Book

The old saying "learn the rules so you can break them" holds so much truth. It's only when designers (or any creative) is fully versed in their field that they can begin to take risks and shake things up. Matthew Patrick Smyth's apartment for Elle Decor's Designer Visions is the perfect example of this. We expect a zig and he gives you a zag. He is such a master of his craft.

Look at that headboard? An antique door frame paired with a Room & Board frame. Old and new. High and low. It is unexpected but so perfectly done. The room is neither opulent nor spare... it is balanced so beautifully.

The entry table is the kicker. Who doesn't love a massive corinthian column? Those delicate lamps pare down the drama and keep the scale from seeming too grand. His finish choices are clean and modern, allowing the eyes to fully appreciate the details of the antiques.

See he full apartment at ElleDecor.com. It's lovely!

What the beautiful people are saying...

Love it! Rules were made to be broken. I want that mirror!

Something to say, gorgeous?
