In the Directoire Chair
Don't you love obsessions? They sneak up on you and suddenly you find yourself consumed with a flavor, a color, a place, a style... something. I'm currently coveting all things Directoire. If you're not quite sure what that means, it's a furniture style that bridges the gap between Louis XVI and Empire styling.
When it comes to identifying pieces from this era there are a few clues to look for to identify a piece... but be forewarned, there are many of variations within the theme. Rather than offer you a history lesson, I'll simply show you some of my favorites.
Pearson offers my one of my favorite upholstered styles. I love the interesting shape, the intricately carved front legs and the unique silhouette. But my real money is on what is commonly described as a guéridon table. I have a secret desire to collect these magical pieces. This one in particular epitomizes French Directoire style. The lion's paw feet and x-shape stretchers make my knees weak. Isn't he lovely?
So tell me... what are you crushing on this week?
