Come Closer, Darling. I Want To Tell You a Secret...
If you've read long enough, you know I'm hardwired for organization & tidiness. I like it clean, fresh and bright. I recently heard the phrase, "Dust is the Devil's snow" and laughed so hard. It's a fun spin on cleanliness is next to Godliness. But to be clean on the surface you must be organized beneath the surface.
Like many neat freaks I have pockets of disorder. My handbag often becomes a quick resting spot for receipts and seemingly every lip gloss that ever crossed my doorway. Solution? New wallet and a cosmetic case.... and discipline. Problem solved.
And for long tie readers you know I've been editing my closet for the better part of two years. The truth is, the fat is all gone. Now I'm cutting into muscle. And while a few pieces of fat (poorly considered purchases) have inched their way into my life, I'm ready to purge them as well. After all, how can my shining stars shimmer without space to shine?
So... what does this post have to do with the pretty interiors of Erinn Valencich above? Plenty. If you want your home to radiate the ease and elegance of fresh, modern interiors - it begins within. Notice that her chosen furnishings showcase items rather than conceal them. It's a nice reminder that if you feel the need to hide things, you still have plenty of editing to do. What's the secret? The secret to living an orderly life is making sure that everything you own has a specific place it "lives" within your home. Every shoe, every necktie, every spoon. If an object does not have a hoe - or worse, if many objects are domestic nomads - your living space can't possibly be filled with the sweet harmony of order.
If you find you "don't have enough hangers" the harsh truth may be that you actually have too many pieces of apparel. Harsh, but true. So what do you say? Are you ready to ditch all of the things that weigh you down? Are you ready to cut deeply into the muscle of your stuff and pare it down to a tight lineup of your favorite things? Will you do it with me?

This is a page out of my book Franki. Clear living spaces make for clear thoughts. Happy new year!

I have 80 custom made hangers that everything except pants and sweaters hang on. Jackets, coats, blouses, dresses, etc. All seasons! If I'm out of hangers, I know that I have too much stuff!!

I'm a little nutty about order as well. As an interior designer people assume I'm good at doing the "fluff" that makes a room look complete...placing things just so, and staging. I'm horrible. I plan space, and am strong with color, but not all the goodies. These rooms, to me, have a great balance and aren't overdone. Fantastic!
