"You Don't Backup?" "Why Does Everyone Keep Asking Me That?"

Picture 26
I love it when life imitates art. And... for the record, I actually do back up - I even use Mac's Time Machine. But it had been a few weeks since I had done so when l'incident de café occurred. This meant that as the days ticked by and "Demitri" had my computer I began to realize all the magical, fabulous, irreplaceable files, emails and photos that hadn't been backed up. There had been an odd series of weeks where life got in the way, and that little black hard drive was neatly tucked in an office closet. Clearly not doing its job (nor was I, while we are being honest). In essence, I'd backed up all of my work but none of my play. (And isn't they play the best part of our computer use?)

Fortunately, she's alive! My Mac comes home today. She seems to be working fine for the moment. This means she'll be attached to that little black portable hard drive Mr. Venti bought me specifically for such purposes.

Unlike Carrie and Aidan, we are compatible. he wanted me to avoid this fate...
But I do want to say... I felt a lot like Carrie this week as even non-computer users casually said, "well of course you back up." Insert eye roll and low growl here.

It's safe to say I had my Carrie Bradshaw moments during these agonizingly long six days. So these videos are for all of you. My Twitter peeps who helped me recall the now classic episode, My Motherboard, My Self. My blogger pals who rallied in support, and Demitri for bringing her back to life and not once asking why a full cup of coffee had entered the aluminum chassis. Some things, you see, are better off left unasked.

But I do want to add this SATC observation: we should have known their relationship was doomed when she berated him for buying her a new laptop. One that looked like a "purse" - and a backup. Aidan "got" her. he understood her. he may not have been her Mr. Big...but those episodes had me shaking my tiny fists of fury at the screen in frustration. Watching him try so hard to find a place in her life. Ahhh.... those were the days, weren't they?

What the beautiful people are saying...

OMG, another Aiden sympathizer! YAY, I found one! :)

First of all, I'm the same way with backing up - I just don't do it. About a few months ago I finally got around to getting DVD backup from flickr with all my photos on it. I'm not even sure where that's at now...

But, I'm a terrible "photographer" - I never really keep my originals. I make the edits of the one I like, upload them and delete the rest and move on. I don't know, it's worked out for me so far.

As far as the blog goes, I never really back up that database either and I probably should.

Back to Aiden, I think I like Aiden so much because I'm sort of dating my own Aiden - the same type of guy who puts up with my meltdowns, tries to loosen the knots in my shoulder and would surprise me with a new laptop and harddrive. But unlike Carrie, I appreciate my Aiden. I already dated a Mr. Big and, frankly, he's a jerk...

That's my two cents hehe

Aiden was a poseur, a tool. Carrie should have dumped him long before she did.

I had a horrible motherboard moment last summer and my chassis also took a full grande cup of Starbuck's Mocha with light whip. Unfortunately, my experience was more like Carrie's as my poor laptop never recovered and I had no backup whatsoever. I have learned my lesson and as I type this my little blackbox backup hard drive is humming along capturing every keystroke.

So, congratulations to you and may you have a wonderful reunion!

Oh I'm a total Aidan sympathizer. He was amazing. Absolutely amazing. I like to think of my sweetie as looking like Mr. Big but with the heart, humor & general personality of Aidan. He "gets" me - thank God! LOL!

And my problem is that I'm bizarrely organized in my physical world... but digital files? Foggeddaboutit.

My work files? Totally organized. But once we get into personal photos and files it seems overwhelming. Things aren't so neatly organized. I suspect we are soul sisters, sweetie!

and.... if you've indeed found your Aidan... keep him! He's a winner!

That reminds me, I need to back up my computer again.

I recently had a Mac meltdown and was SOOO angry at myself that I hadn't backed everything up on the shiny new external hard drive I'd just bought.

However, a lot of my important files, I had backed up on a jump drive and/or on Gmail (thank goodness for Google!!!). But, I totally sympathize. It took me years to learn this lesson and now I'm going to get rather obsessive about it. I want to start backing up once a week... build it into my schedule JUST IN CASE. ;)

Paul, the second version of Aiden (after the cheat) was a bad Aiden. but untarnished Aiden/Carrie... so good!

I once lost everything on my Mac (had to spend lots of money to hire a specialist to get it back!). You just reminded me, I need to back up! Thanks!

always did love me some aiden. BIGTIME. i dated a guy in college who totally had the aiden mouth. i still get all ooey gooey when i hear his voiceovers on these damn applebees commercials. but enough about me - i'm SO glad your mac is back! :)

it's funny because my brother's Mac crashed a few weeks ago...and then i couldn't resist quoting from SATC. he didn't get the reference, but i felt a small amount of satisfaction being able to use it! luckily, he didn't lose all of his info either.
xox

Aiden was the best! I kind of fell out of love with Carrie when she would not marry Aiden after he took her back when she cheated. He was so good to her and I could not understand why she did not appreciate him. Oh well! Still love SATC though. Glad your computer is back! Yeah!

I saw this on your twitter a couple days ago and automatically knew which season! Just finished watching this episode literally 2 days ago!! Hoping my Mac doesn't have some freak accident any time soon.

Oh, such a big fear of mine! I've been backing up on Mobile Me and CDs lately. And then sometimes I email myself important files so that they're on my email, too. Thank goodness for Mr. Venti!

Something to say, gorgeous?
