It's true. My favorite Bond - Sean Connery himself - is now modeling in an ad campaign for the esteemed Louis Vuitton. Interestingly, commercial models (not runway) are trending older.Companies like LV see that their brand rep is better served if their campaigns aren't purely focused on the Agnes Deyn of the moment.
First, they did this with racial diversity (Benetton ads, anyone?). Then came (what I would call) beauty diversity, where they celebrated faces and bodies that weren't strictly classically beautiful (yawn) in favor of more exotic beauties (think Lauren Hutton and her infamous gapped teeth).
And now, with companies like J. Crew jumping on board with more mature models we can expect to see more seasoned celebs and models gracing the pages of Vogue. Last year Vuitton used Gorbachev in a controversial ad, followed by an ad featuring Kieth Richards. Somehow I think Sean Connery will be far less edgy - and much easier on the eyes - than either of those two gentlemen. In fact, I'd like to see more ads that featured Connery. Sean Connery. [Editorial note: Kieth was an interesting choice... the message
there might have been "Quality luggage that withstands any abuse. Just
like you."... or maybe, "Rugged. Just like your visage."]
Interesting note, this photo was a test shot, taken before hair and makeup. And yet, out favorite Scotsman and his rugged good looks were enough to make this the frame used in the campaign. Great Scot, indeed!
If you need more proof that fashionistas (and fashionistos) are abundant at every age, just look here. It's the Sartorialist, only more wizened.
[Editorial note #2... those of you paying close attention will see that I just tipped you off to one of my best kept J. Crew secrets...]
